The city service’s are inadequate. There is a lot of litter and loitering, the sidewalks are poorly maintained and unsafe for pedestrians due to indiscriminate skateboarding. It feels like the city is over run with tourism and can’t keep up with demand for sanitation, repair and upkeep. Does the Chamber of Commerce provide oversight and assistance?
Idaho Springs is a tiny town that was founded during the Gold Rush. There are some nice old buildings in the center of town with restaurants and shops on the 2-block pedestrian street. There are quite a few activities nearby including a tour of the gold mine located right in town as well as river rafting and other activities. It is worth a 2-night stay if you are participating in the local activities or acclimating yourself to go to higher altitudes.
The visitors center was very helpful. Restaurant recommendations were great. Marion's for good breakfast. BeauJo's for pizza pie. Didn't have time to visit the breweries but had some Tommy Knockers beer at BeauJo's, good. Good location and not too long a drive to visit other attractions. Went to Phoenix mine tour and my husband got to do some gold panning. Also went to Georgetown and took the train ride and mine tour. Near Central City. Other than the driving up and down the mountains, trip was great.
Must be amazing in winter...we just came to fish in the summer. The locals are friendly enough but they clearly had fishing going on in town but they kept referring me to a lake that was in another. What would greatly improved this township would be a little app or even old school map of the area with insider summer activity spots and how to get there. Its hard to tell in a small town like this where to go and how. Would recommend beau jos for pizza, piccis is alright but not to the same caliber. The area of Miner street was nice, but you have to find it, the main street you drive in on doesn't take you there. Lot of little shops and restaurants, it would be great if they had more parking.
Idaho springs is probably best known for its hot springs nowadays. But it’s where the gold rush started! So you can tour the Argo mine, great fishing in public areas, go skiing in Loveland 20-30 minutes away, visit Georgetown for train rides or in the summer go white water rafting and do obstacle courses.
Best thing about the stay was the barbeque restaurant in town Smokin Yard Barbeque - best pulled pork sandwich I have ever had and good prices - actually ate there on our way back home to Ohio - There was a really good ice cream place - kind of pricey but really good
