Key West FAQs: Tips for every trip

Plenty of Limes and Good Times

Key West is a gem of an island in the Florida Keys, popular with pleasure seekers and history buffs alike. As the most southern destination in the continental United States, Key West has a fascinating history, dating back to its settlement by Spanish explorers in the 16th century.

Today, this little island off the coast of Florida attracts over a million cruise visitors a year through the Port of Key West. Visitors come to see Hemingway House, where Ernest Hemingway penned "A Farewell to Arms." Key West Cemetery provides a unique walk through the multicultural past of the city. There are also trolley rides through the historic district of Jackson Square.

There’s more than just history to Key West, however. Smathers Beach is a place to have fun in the sun, while Mallory Square provides the chance to shop and watch a magnificent sunset. The excellent bus system helps you get around the island without a car.

Key West International Airport is a mere 4 miles from Duval Street, the heart of downtown and a good place to stay for easily exploring the nearby sights. With accommodations ranging from resorts to B&Bs, Booking.com helps you get the best stay for the best price in Key West!

We had a wonderful family trip to Key West, and even though it was only a one-night stay, we managed to pack in some unforgettable highlights. We kicked things off with a fascinating visit to the San Carlos Institute, followed by a mandatory (and delicious) slice of Key Lime pie at Kermit’s. For dinner, we caught a breathtaking sunset at Sunset Pier while enjoying great food and cocktails. We even managed to wake up early the next morning to catch the sunrise at the Southernmost Point before wrapping up our trip with an outstanding breakfast at Moondog Cafe. Key West has so much to offer that a single night barely scratches the surface. We missed out on the ghost tour, the cemetery tour, the Hemingway House, the Key West Distillery, and hitting the beach—but that just gives us the perfect excuse to come back for a longer stay. Highly recommend every single stop we made!

I liked Key West. Duvall Street was awesome.

I liked Key West. Duvall Street was awesome. I also enjoyed our Danger Charter excursion. Sloppy Joe's, The Moon Dog and Hogsbreath were my favorite restaurants. I also enjoyed touring Ernest Hemingway's home. I did not like the sky high parking rates. It was difficult finding parking and when you did... you paid threw the nose for it. My wallet is still in shock for the amount of cash spent on parking.

I really enjoyed my time in Key West.

I really enjoyed my time in Key West. It was pleasantly laid back, unlike Miami, where we visited during the same trip. We also found some great places to eat and drink - not just the usual chain rubbish. I'd love to have gone fishing, as it sounds a brilliant fishing spot, but we sadly didn't have time - but I'll be back ...

Key West has an interesting history, although it's quite small there are a lot of things to see and do. Plenty of shopping and when it gets too hot Ubers are so quick and inexpensive so getting around is easy if you don't want to walk.

Best Conch Fritters ever!

Best Conch Fritters ever! The food truck is located near the Shipwreck Museum. While we walked to most places we did use Uber twice. Lobster Pizza was sooooo good, the restaurant is located near the Southernmost Bouy. Beaches this time of year were a bit stinky, but Fort Zachery Taylor Beach was fine.

Key West is similar to an island.

Key West is similar to an island. It is unique and has an interesting history. There seems to be a strong community among the people who live there year round. The tourism does create exaggerated prices. Once you're there you are at the mercy of the elevated cost of living. The fishing, snorkeling, kayaking, bicycling, etc. is worth the trip. It is a beautiful place to visit.

The breakfast is OK, good coffeee and choices of foods. The eggs and sausage were terrible, really not worth putting out if that is the quality and effort that going to be used . Eggs were like soup, the “ham “ looked like something found on a Little Ceasers Pizza or cheaper . For the money this hotel (and others) gouge! people for a place to sleep put a little more effort into the “hot” breakfast portion or just leave it out. The location is good, the people were helpful and the shuttle to Duval is good.

I spent 3 days in Key West, which is a small island perfect for commuting by bike. After seeing in the hotel brochure that they offered this rental service, I decided to take advantage of it. Renting a bike for $15/day was the best decision to avoid wasting time on the road. Also, the lady at the front office was so helpful. Lastly, they have complimentary drinks in the public area in a minibar. I just grabbed a beer because it was too hot outside, and I wanted to have a beer.
