Key West is a gem of an island in the Florida Keys, popular with pleasure seekers and history buffs alike. As the most southern destination in the continental United States, Key West has a fascinating history, dating back to its settlement by Spanish explorers in the 16th century.
Today, this little island off the coast of Florida attracts over a million cruise visitors a year through the Port of Key West. Visitors come to see Hemingway House, where Ernest Hemingway penned "A Farewell to Arms." Key West Cemetery provides a unique walk through the multicultural past of the city. There are also trolley rides through the historic district of Jackson Square.
There’s more than just history to Key West, however. Smathers Beach is a place to have fun in the sun, while Mallory Square provides the chance to shop and watch a magnificent sunset. The excellent bus system helps you get around the island without a car.

Many of our friends told us not to visit Key West with children, but we did anyway and they had a blast! My husband and I don’t really drink so we were a bit nervous about finding things to do that weren’t focused around alcohol. We found plenty to do and filled up our 3-day vacay with family-friendly activities.
If you’re traveling with children, highly recommend the following:
1. Snorkeling with Fury tours. We did the double dip in the morning before it got too hot. They did a great job helping our children with their gear.
2. Watching the sunset at Mallory Square. Lots of street performers and shops kept the kids occupied and laughing.
3. Visiting Hemingway’s home. TBH, we could care less about the house, but seeing the 6-toed cats was worth it. A lot of them let us touch their paws and count their beans.
4. Ghost tour. A bit pricey but a lot of fun!

Key West is a nice visit, but for a European maybe not the most exciting. Given the rather long drive, in hinsight we would probably not have done the trip, but rather focused more on "mainland" Florida.

Lots to do in Key West.
Lots to do in Key West. We do not drink or party; we take the family to enjoy the water, the activities, nature/wildlife, a little entertainment, and a little history. Our hotel had a free shuttle to two different locations in Key West, and most things were "walkable" from there with the exception of Smathers Beach. We caught a Lyft there. Each Lyft was $10-15, so that was reasonable for the few times we needed it. There is a free bus that circles Duval Street for people traveling around there. We ate at The Boat House on the main marina. There are numerous restaurants there where you can sit and look out over the water. Beautiful and the food is good at all the places we've eaten there. Walk down to Mallory Square from there for evening entertainment, art booths, and the sunset. We did day and night kayaking, jet skiing, snorkeling, parasailing, paddleboarding, sailing... packages that include meals are great. Save up your money so you can take advantage of the packages. We ate at the Tavern N Town at the Beachside Resort, and every bite was delicious. They are known for their appetizer bread, and it does not disappoint. I've seriously never tasted bread so delicious. Went to the butterfly conservatory for the first time on my last trip, and enjoyed seeing blue morphos and lots of other butterflies, flamingos, and a few other birds. Saw Hemingway's house on one visit, and the cats were a hit with the kids. You need to go to the Southernmost point for a photo op, but you may have to wait in line for your turn. There's a nice breeze, but it is HOT in the summer, so take your neck cooling fan or towel, a hat, comfy shoes, and lots of sunscreen.

Love key west - such a great vibe (esp on Duval St). 2nd visit after 12yrs - loved it. Did Hemingway house & the White House on this visit. We ate dinner at Southernmost Beach - fabulous food, brunch at Blue Heaven, pizza slice on Duval Street & Key lime Pie everywhere we went! Easy to get round on foot - but due to rain & husbands bad back we also used anniversary a couple of times.
It’s a lovely, cosy, romantic little hotel. In the middle of Downtown Key west. The garden is an urban jungle, the breakfast was exactly what we were expecting. We had an amazing stay. Also the personal was very helpful regarding restaurants, parking and the neighbourhood. Would definitely recommend.
we loved how spacious the apartment was, and we loved sitting out on the balcony each evening! the hotel was lovely and quiet at night too and easy to drive to the beaches and key west each day stopping off at publix for a packed lunch! we loved it here
A super nice "small hotel".
With a perfect distance to the center of key west. It is wonderfully peaceful and quiet. But it is possible to walk or cycle to Duval st.
It was continental breakfast, but of a better quality one expected.
We only slept here one night. Quite an expensive hotel, but that's Key West. Close to many restaurants, about half an hour's walk to the center. Possibility to rent bicycles (for a fee).
