Rocky Mount is a small town that has grown through the years but is very close to Ferrum college so excellent location for blue ridge folklife festival- there are nice albeit not numerous choices to dine out and a brewery and winery (we didn’t visit). Close enough to Martinsville Speedway, but not so close as to be overrun. Beautiful Autumn foliage season. Near some beautiful drives, including Blue Ridge Parkway (though it is partially closed for repairs). Easy/quick shopping and dining very close.
