Santa Cruz was surf central California long before the Beach Boys sang about it. The Surfing Museum in the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse tells stories of those who have braved some of the world’s best waves.
Overlooking the ocean rollers are the Coconut Grove Ballroom and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk - the oldest amusement park in the state of CA, and the last original one on the West Coast. Its historic carousel, rollercoasters and rides are a colourful backdrop to Cowell’s Beach, best viewed from the Sky Glider cable cars.
Jutting into Monterey Bay is the wharf where sea lions bask and pelicans decide on their next meal. Seafood restaurants are abundant here and the bars provide lively nightlife. Pacific Avenue is the main shopping area and one street away is the Museum of Art & History.
Unsurprisingly for a surfer hotspot, the city has a liberal outlook and is known for political activism - a far cry from the era when the Santa Cruz Mission was established. The mission is now a state park alongside Natural Bridges Beach and the Big Basin Redwoods in forested hills behind the city, home to the gravity-defying Mystery Spot.
Booking.com’s Santa Cruz accommodation includes pet-friendly motels, hotels with hot tubs and cheap inns near UCSC.
I felt it would be better for a family with kids- lots to do for kids not so much for 2 75 year old women. Did have an awesome dinner at the Crows Nest . Also they have a beach barbecue every Thursday evening from Memorial Day to Labor Day on the beach at the harbor.
Love Santa Cruz, great place to visit. Capitola beach is a nice place to spend the day, good place to swim. Also take a drive through UCSC and visit McHenry library, take a peek at the Grateful Dead Archive. Drive by, or better yet, walk along Pleasure Point and look at the surfers.
Santa Cruz is the perfect destination for a family with kids of different ages: boardwalk for the 10-year-old, surf for the teenagers, bookshops and cafés for the parent! Beach volley and beautiful walks along the coast for everyone!
Be prepared, it's expensive! But you'll definitely have a lot of fun! The Boardwalk is amazing! And walk all the way to the end of the pier where you can see the sea lions and even all the way to the lighthouse.
The beach in Santa Cruz is one of my favorite places. I love taking deep breaths of the sea air. It is so relaxing to sit or lay in the sun on the Santa Cruz Beach. If you are stressed this is the vacation for you. Also, the boardwalk is fun and a lot less expensive compared to places like Great America or Six Flags. You don't need to pay to get in. You can buy an all-day pass, or put money on a My Boardwalk Play Card. The Play Card will give you access to food and souvenirs, as well as individual rides. It was best that we went on weekdays. There were still a lot of tourists but not as many as on the weekends. The wharf is great for fishing or going on a boat ride. There are all sorts of great restaurants there and fish markets. There are beautiful sights to see all along the coast in and around Santa Cruz. The motel we stayed at was not right on the coast but within walking distance of the boardwalk, the beach, and the wharf. It was a reasonable price. The whole trip was really fun and a wonderful place to visit.
The Santa Cruz boardwalks is super fun with kids. The town itself is a bit run down and the beach has a problem w trash. I would go to a state beach near by or head up or down the coast to a neighboring town. No need to stay in Santa Cruz, but I would visit.
Santa Cruz
I loved the beds they were so comfy I have had a hard time find comfy beds at the hotels in Santa Cruz. The price was great l, rooms are clean staff was great. Check in was easy and the location is great. Safeway across the street, donuts also. On mission street there are many good restaurants and added bonus there were two Starbucks. I will be staying here whenever I come into town. Thank you guys!
Santa Cruz
I was in Santa Cruz for the Ironman 70. 3 race. I couldn't be happier with the location. It is right across the street from Athlete Village and the transition area. The hotel itself is nice with renovated bathroom, free parking, daily housekeeping, and good beds. It's a short stroll to the beach and Boardwalk. Would stay again at this property.
Santa Cruz
The staff is friendly and check in was super easy. Parking is slim there, but they have more spots in the back of the hotel that were very convenient. You can't beat the location and that's what I paid for. Walking distance to everything great about Santa Cruz. They also are one of the few hotels that allow pets.
Santa Cruz
This is my favorite moderately-priced hotel in Santa Cruz. The staff are lovely, the location is great, and the rooms are clean and cozy, with plenty of electrical outlets, storage areas for bags, a big tub, and a refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker.
Santa Cruz
Location, location, location. Can´t beat those sea views from your window! Also loved the hotel vibe, really what we were looking for visiting a surf town as Santa Cruz is. We could walk everywhere and it felt a lot safer than I expected.
Santa Cruz
The room included a kitchenette, which we were not expecting. All was clean and it didn’t have a funky smell, like some places do. Overall I liked the place and plan to stay there again the next time I visit Santa Cruz.
Santa Cruz
Nice staff in a comfortable and relaxed setting. Although we were a couple of miles from centre of Santa Cruz it was quick and easy to get in and out. Lovely beach 2 minutes walk away.
Great location and just a short walk over the bridge into Santa Cruz. Rooms were very spacious and beds very comfortable. Annan at reception was a great host and extremely helpful.
Santa Cruz
Older style hotel with very comfortable beds and pillows. Close to the beach Jane is very nice and was of great assistance when I had to leave a day early Thank you Jane
We drove down to Santa Cruz for Woodies on the Wharf car show and the Pacific Blue inn is walking distance from the Wharf and cheaper, nicer than the guest hotel.
Cozy hotel in the perfect location in Santa Cruz: close to the forests and the beach. Highly recommend and will stay again when we return to Santa Cruz!
Hotel is near a bus station to metro center and with several walkable distance tourism spots. The breakfast was good among hotels with same price.
I paid for breakfast, but there was none each morning. I am not getting a response from the hotel.
Santa Cruz
Pleasantly surprised by the room: cleaner than expected, and looked good for a two star hotel.
What a great hotel, staff was amazing ! Would stay again !
