My sisters and I enjoyed our trip to Tybee Island.

My sisters and I enjoyed our trip to Tybee Island. It seemed to be a quiet place with more "mature" people. The condo we stayed in was within walking distance of several of the places we went about a mile or so. One of my sisters stopped at the Tybee Visitor Station and got lots of helpful advice. One lady actually helped her plan our meals and adventures. Many of the locals gave us advice on where to eat, shop and what to do also. We climbed the lighthouse and visited the other places onsite, went on Captain Derek's Dolphin Adventures and saw many dolphins and a beautiful sunset. Gator and Emmalyne were great. I highly recommend. One morning we had breakfast at Sunrise Restaurant, another day lunch at Sundae Cafe and dinner at Sting Ray's Seafood and Bubba Gumbo's where we could see the dock where the fresh seafood is brought in daily. We spent one whole day in Savannah and went on the Savannah for Morons Comedy Trolley, and it was hysterical. The "Moron Twins kept us laughing. if in Savannah, you have to go to Leopold's Ice Cream. The long line you stand it is a testament of how good it tastes and well worth the wait.

Tybee Island is a treasure and I almost hate to tell people to visit because a big part of its charm is the unspoiled beauty of the dunes. More popularity means more development and that is good/bad.

I'm from East Tennessee, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge is 20 minutes away. I am use to tourist and cost of things, but the paying for parking in the Tybee/ Savanah area had me surprised! Everywhere we went we had to pay to park! Other than that ,I really enjoyed my stay.

Tybee provides two main attractions: the beach, and historic areas. The area where we stayed is the former Fort Screven, and while not preserved as a tourist attraction, many if the buildings are identified by their former Army purposes. It's an attractive and very walkable area, with light car traffic. (Some people rent electric "golf carts" for their stays.) Nearby, on the next island, is Fort Pulaski, a National Park Service site, fairly similar to Fort McHenry (but not the same) and worth touring. The beach itself is fairly flat, with fine sand, and a shallow grade well into the water. The "middle beach" was not at all crowded (we were there at various times of day). There is little surf, and when we were there in late July, in the afternoon the water was bathtub-warm. One of our grandsons was stung on both feet by a jellyfish, but got over it in a few hours with the aid of some vinegar and Benadryl. As far as we know this is not a very frequent hazard. We ate at Huc-a-Poo, a big, extremely casual pizza and burger place; food was good and a great value. We also had a meal at The Crab Shack, a sprawling complex serving almost exclusively shellfish, mainly crab and shrimp. Prices were higher but not a bad value for what we got. (And they have an enclosure with alligators you can feed, and other attractions.) Both were outdoor seating or screened spaces - no air conditioning - but they comfortably accommodated our large group on a walk-in basis. Both were fun to be at. It's a 50-minute drive to historic Savannah, where there is plenty to see. We would have liked to take an air-conditioned trolley tour - it was too hot for much walking when we visited - but the offerings were not clearly identified on the Web. In more moderate weather, walking the streets would be very enjoyable.

Only real negative was it was HOT!

Only real negative was it was HOT! We came with a friend to meet his friend who lives there and even the locals were commenting on the heat. Still, had a great time. Tybee seems to be hanging on to that older coastal vibe. Most of the shops are local unique...no surf-style etc. There may have been some McDonalds and such, but we just went to all the local restaurants. The brewery was tiny but had a great IPA. Bars at the beach are old school...heck, you can smoke in Tybee Time! We ate at Traylor Park, the Mexican place under the brewery, and Sundae Cafe for dinner (very nice! Get the pimento fritter. Steaks were quality, but a tad more done than requested.), and Huc-a-poos (sp?) which really did have great pizza. The only bar I had a problem with was zunzibar (sp?) where a friend got punted for smoking where the waitress told him to by the manager and the guy paying guitar was simply too loud. Use the older golf kart rental on N Campbell if you can, they bent over backwards for our arrival time.

This is a great beach town that wasn't overly crowded.

This is a great beach town that wasn't overly crowded. Beach is clean and lovely. Nice pavilion. Plenty of good restaurants and cute shops. Great alternative for similarly priced destinations like myrtle beach that I personally can't stand unless it's off season.

I have celiac disease & they accommodated my meals with expertise without making a fuss. The food was delicious & they kept water bottles chilled for our use daily. We had great conversations & atmosphere was very homey & relaxed. They gad bicycles available for all guests & beach chairs, towels, sunscreen & coolers.
