Sheila - your question is a little vague so I’m not really sure what sort of advice you’re looking for?

To get to Kyoto from Haneda, take the Keikyu (train) line to Shinagawa and the Shinkansen from there. Are you returning to Haneda to fly home? If so, you may want to see whether a 7 day JR Pass is worthwhile.

As for places to stay, this website exists to do just that, so try searching. If there are 7 (or 8) of you, you may want to look at AirBnB (or similar) places.

[p.s. I do wish this forum would fix its formatting problems - it's frustrating when responses don't get recognised (in the 'reply' count), it won't let you edit the response ... so all you can do is post it again ...]

True, in addition, after reading the replies and click the back button, it takes you back to the top of the most recent posts. Annoying!

First of all there are two Tokyo International Airports. Either you fly to Haneda or Narita airport (sometimes airlines offer better deals from US to Narita).
Second, around the city, you may take their 2 major metro trains (Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway). The most common in DT Tokyo is the JR Yamanote line. Use google maps.
You may take the metro trains from one of these airports. I have used so many times in Japan google.com/maps.
Third, still using google maps, from tokyo to kyoto, it will direct you to use the Shinkansen bullet trains.
Furthermore, the first thing you need to do is set your specific places for your arrival and departure then use google maps. Good luck.

Hi - Did you already book your tickets? If not, I suggest flying into KIX (Kansai Int'l), instead :-) IF your focus is staying in Kyoto.
