I used credit cards that had no foreign transaction fees.
To clarify, for accommodations. For travel we had either JRPass or Suica/Icoca card.
Although Japan is starting to increase the usage of credit cards and cashless payment method, cash is still required for many payments, mainly restaurants. So I recommend to have some cash during travel. Accommodations in general accepts credit card. For transportation (bus and trains) I recommend to purchase JR Pass or buy IC cards (like Suica).
Great, thank you.
Bring enough cash to cover you for everything but some hotels and transport (such as the ticket office for the shinkansen) may accept card. For the metro and other non-shinkansen trains, use an IC card such as Suica or Pasmo and load it up with credit using cash at any machine in any metro or train station.
Cash is still king in Japan... Places will accept credit card but cash is still best
