The best countries to visit in Latin America for a solo traveler

I've always had a dream to visit countries of Latin America. I would like not only to explore other cultures and la vida loca there, but also to improve my Spanish. I love the language!! My friends advise me that it's quite dangerous to travel to Latin America countries alone, especially if you are a woman. But I would like to know some opinions about it and recommendations where are the best and safest places to go. Thank you so much!!!

I visited Peru, Mexico, Brazil, Costa Rica, Panama. Mexico, Cancun is the best for relaxing, the best sea, amazing tours on Yucatan, Costa Rica is quite safe, but not in San Hose city. I would advice Peru and Mexico. Panama is good, amazing national parks.

I lived in Costa Rica, and San Jose is actually quite safe if you are smart about where you go, and are aware of your surroundings (aka don't be flashy or distracting).

Ecuador is also stunning, but avoid the big cities and be aware of high crime rate, especially taxis and phone/bag stealing.

I just go to Guayaquil to travel to Yasuni from there. Is it really dangerous?

Guayaquil is also a very tourist city, it is dangerous if you call attention to it, for example, by holding your cell phone in your hand or by taking large amounts of money out on the street. He always asks for information from people he trusts, like the hotel where you stay most, not the street. You must call safe taxis like uber or cabfy to mobilirtd

The safest country in LatAm is Chile and it's definitely worth visiting. You can find whatever lanscape you want - from glaciers of Patagonia to Atacama Desert. The people are really nice there. I felt very safe everywhere. Only in Valparaiso you should avoid some areas after sunset.

Ecuador is beautiful and in tourist areas it is safe. I visited Quito and then took a beautiful trip to Galapagos. Totally sure.

Chile is wonderful, as you say, there's a lot to know, desert, north, glaciers to the south and wonderful forests of spectacular vegetation.

For the first time it occurs to me that I want to go to Chile and even think about buying a house and not going back to Uruguay. I'm 49 and I don't want to stay because I'm bored.

I've visited Guatemala, Mexico, Costa Rica and Cuba (and also in Brazil if it counts:). I did all of it either with a friend or with my partner. I would say that Guatemala and Mexico are a really good combination and also countries in which you can meet a lot of travelers on the way, as opposed to Costa Rica in which we saw mosetly couples or Cuba which in my opinion is not recommended for a solo traveler.

Peru would be a great option, and should be relatively safe if you are sticking to the main tourist areas of Machu Picchu and Cusco. Of course, always keep an eye on your belongings. Machu Picchu is totally breathtaking. Some places don't live up to the hype, but Machu Picchu does, as pictures can't really do justice to the atmosphere of the site. I've been twice.

I lived in Costa Rica for 5 years, and have experienced nearly every part of it as a solo traveler, in a group of people, and as a couple. There are hostels and programs everywhere that are awesome for being solo. I would recommend regions such as Montezuma-Santa Teresa for a more relaxed beach town atmosphere (this is did solo, and did a surf program in Montezuma), Jaco if you want party and beach (though not the nicest beach...but R2B is an AMAZING hostel for meeting people), Monteverde for nature and cooler temperatures (this is more of a family and couples location, but there are still hostels), Puerto Viejo for more of a laid back party and beach vibe (but try not to go during rainy season..otherwise it is a great place to meet people). Any there ideas you need let me know!

Hi, I've travelled to all of the countries in Central America and many in Latin America, some as a couple but most a solo woman traveller. My favourite places are as follows;
Belize - for the snorkelling and diving
Panama for the islands in Bocos Del Torro
Guatemala - Antigua & Lake Atitlan and also Flores
Nicaragua - Leon, Granada, Little Corn Island
Northern Chile for an amazing drive over the high altiplano, the flamingo lakes and into Bolivia
Peru - to realise my childhood dream of seeing Machu Picchu (as someone else stated, yes it was stunning)
Bolivia - Salar de Uyuni slat lakes
Argentina - the very southern tip - The Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the most amazing sites I've seen.
Colombia - Cartagena and Medellin and a tiny island called Providencia
Lots more but these were my highlights and the top 5 places I would return to are ;
Belize
Colombia
Panama
Nicaragua
Chile
As long as you have your street smarts and don't go flashing expensive digital equipment and are prepared for some good natured banter (especially on the north Caribbean side of Central America) I felt perfectly safe as a woman in all those places. I have about 200 words of Spanish, curiosity & a smile so that took care of most things.
Places I didn't feel as safe in were parts of El Salvador and Honduras.
I liked Costa Rica but found it the most developed of all the places I've visited, with lots of American tourists and therefore the most expensive, but it is very safe! Oh and of course I love Mexico too but didn't count that in.
I want to travel to Brazil, Surinam, Guyana next - I guess I'm addicted to that part of the world!

chile I recommend, the country is very quiet, you have south snow, glaciers, mountains, the center you have vegetation, forests, beaches, mountain range, north you have deserts, beaches mountain range, people are very quiet and nice, welcome if you decide.

I'm lucia de chile!!! Delighted to recite here in the island field of puluqui in the south a small magical island where until today we cultivate as many years ago the custom of our grandfather endures

Hey, I've been through most of South America and some of the Caribbean. Panama, Cuba, Rep Dominicana, Panama, if you're looking for paradise beaches and super quiet, I recommend San Blas in Panama or San Andres. Remember, most of the tourist sites are very well guarded. Brazil is beautiful, Argentina is wonderful. Well, it's up to you for any questions.

Dominican Republic

I recommend the Dominican Republic. We have beaches, mountains and it's quite safe. You just have to be careful in some areas that you better ask before you go visit. Especially in very marginalized neighborhoods. But in general you can visit Dominicana and enjoy your friendly and helpful people. Come and enjoy the land of meringue and bachata and the good cuisine that the Dominican Republic offers to its visitors.
Come on, he's not going to regret it!!

I am in Ecuador. I took the Wanderbus. Several single ladies have been on our bus. Most beautiful country I’ve seen . Very diverse . Our bus has taken us through the Andes mountains (Quito, Cuenca and many towns in between ), Amazon , Banos ( adventure capital of Ecuador ), now off to beaches of Montanita. Wanderbus Ecuador is an awesome way to travel here. They give you lists of places to stay although I used https://booking.com . It’s very inexpensive to eat, travel and stay in Ecuador . I have never felt unsafe here whatsoever. Wanderbus guides speak Spanish and English and are a wealth of information.

Chile is a very good option, depending on the type of climate you prefer, you can choose a region. It's a safe place, with a lot of variety, both culture and beautiful climates and landscapes, and that's the magic. The only problem I think you might have is understanding Spanish spoken by some people in very rural areas, but beyond that, all right. Good luck<3

Hi, I'm an equator. I recommend that if you go to the east, it should be accompanied by guides. Not that it's dangerous for crime, but that there are certain places that are nature reserves and other places are dangerous because they're so big that you might get lost. And if you're going to yasuni recommend holy water baths in tungurahua it's a magical and warm place... good luck on your journey

Hello how are you? Look I recommend Colombia to travel, it's a beautiful country and its people are excellent. I recommend Cartagen with its beaches and its old town. Bogota DC that the capital, Medellin. Which is the fashion capital of Latin America, the coffee axis to taste the best coffee in the world, santa Marta and her park Tayrona, sierra nevada and its beautiful beaches, Barranquilla with its carnivals in February and I am short on what I tell you.

In Latin America all the countries are beautiful but you have to try not to stay long in their capitals that have become quite insecure because of the lack of work and travel within each country. There you will find the warmth of the people of the people with their simplicity and humility that characterize the American. I invite you to see Uruguay! Www.facebook.com/eseturecoturism

I have not had the opportunity to travel internationally, but I would like to recommend my country Colombia, but the coastal cities, such as Cartagena, Santa Marta, La guajira are very tourist and safe, there are lots of great hotels with quite economic prices and there is a lot to see, you will enjoy it!

Hi, Melissa. I'm chilean, and I must to say this is a safe country (beyond the obvious precautions of not showing your reflex camera in crowded places, or not walking alone at night). But also, I'm a solo traveller and I'd been lucky to spend time in Argentina, Brazil, Perú and Mexico by my own. The most important thing is people: people is warm here in South America; no matter where are you from, the 98% of people is willing to help you, to advice you, to smile you. Book your hostels from home, check the places you wanna see, prepare a "must see map" and go ahead. Just trust. Buen viaje, y buena suerte.
