Broughton House

Cartmel

Built around 1810, the charming Broughton House is located in 2 acres of gardens, south of the Lake District National Park. It has hearty Aga breakfasts and spacious bedrooms.

Individually decorated, the bedrooms have wooden floors and a large, luxurious bathroom with free toiletries. They also feature tea/coffee making facilities and garden views. Broughton House is an absolute gem. One usually reads about places like this in romantic novels or some sort of fiction... The property itself is beautiful. It's tucked away on the side of a narrow country lane, which apparently is a problem to some guests. Yes, it requires a bit more care and attention to drive on a lane like this than on an A road, but in return you get a completely idyllic situation. No road noise whatsoever. Birds chirping and singing from the crack of dawn. Beautiful surroundings, roses, lavender, a dovecote with lovely white doves, sweet little birds like blue tits coming to feed from the numerous bird feeders, and there are some hens who produce the eggs for your breakfast. The bedroom is of good size, with a lovely, comfortable bed. En-suite bathroom, spotlessly clean, proper hot water available for your shower (and it's not a trickle either). There's a cupboard on the landing that has everything available you possibly want whilst staying there: teas (two dozen types at least), coffees (that's in addition to the hospitality tray in your room!), an iron that you can borrow, headache tablets, heartburn medication, make up remover, toothpaste, etc. etc. A sign says that you can use any of these. There is a small flat screen tv in the room, with (I think) freeview channels. (We barely watched any tv, but the reception was good anyway.) The lady who runs this place, Cate, is absolutely lovely. Nothing is too much trouble for her and she genuinely cares about what you'd like. She bakes amazing brownies and shortbreads, which are then placed in cookie jars in your room (this is then topped up again the next day). Breakfast is what you want, when you want it; all freshly prepared, the way you would like it. (My poached egg was perfect. No-one else has managed to make me such good poached egg during my entire holiday and we've been on the road for 9 days now, and counting.
