Bridgwater is a sad place.
Bridgwater is a sad place. The river trade, upon which its very existence depends, is gone and Bridgwater is not developing a replacement economy. The few shops still open are quiet, charity shops or selling vapes or other useless trash. A depressing place to visit. I stopped here to find Somerset wicker basket sellers. I had never been to Bridgwater before and was not very impressed with what I saw on my brief stay. It is very much like lots of other similar size locations - no interesting shops and too many fast-food outlets. The overall centre was rather sad and neglected but that is not too different to many other towns. Easy to get to off the M5 so a great location for nosing...
Easy to get to off the M5 so a great location for nosing around the area. We went to Dunster Castle which was well worth the effort and another National Trust Property - Knightshayes near Tiverton - which is really stunning and you could easy make a day of it. We also spent a happy couple of hours at the Procktor Farm Car Boot plus several Antique Shops to browse. The hotel is in a central location and has a courtyard which leads to the evening bar.
