The Jewel in the Sicilian Crown
As you admire crystal-clear turquoise seas from a Taormina piazza drenched with vibrant pink blossoms, you might have to pinch yourself. The amazing location of this picturesque town is its crowning glory.
But wait, there's more. Surrounded by trees just below the main town, the largely intact Greek Theater has amazing views across the stage towards Mount Etna fuming away in the distance. Great summer performances are still held here, and several of the town’s bars feature live music.
Corso Umberto I runs through the heart of Taormina, from Piazza Corvaja to the 13th-century cathedral, and houses many shops and cafés. Midway along is Piazza IX Aprile, with a clock tower and church overlooked by a rocky hill topped with a castle.
A cable car runs from the town down to the beautiful Taormina beaches (where the train station is also found). At the center of the W-shaped bay is little Isola Bella, an island nature reserve. To the southwest, there's a long stretch of sand at Giardini-Naxos, and to the north is the bay by Mazzaró.
As you'd expect of Sicily’s most beautiful resort, there's no shortage of places to stay in Taormina on Booking.com, including 5-star hotels on the beach, centrally located apartments and luxury B&Bs.

We stayed at the top of the town so the views were great but beach not easily accessible without transport. If you have mobility issues think carefully before visit as lots of steps and can be hilly in places. The shops were bespoke and a wonderful assortment of restaurants available although very touristy. If we had transportation it would’ve been great to explore at a different level. Taormina is one of the most beautiful places we have stayed at. The town is clean, safe and historic. There are lots of bars, restaurants, shops and cafes. The beaches are small but lovely. The water is crystal clear at Isola Bella and we spent ages swimming in there. There is a walk up lots of steps to the church and then on to the castle which we really enjoyed. Views on route were stunning. We would also recommend visiting the amphitheatre and go early when it is quieter. The trip to Etna nord was well worth it but take a jumper as cold up there. The Godfather tour is also lovely even if you have never watched the film. The two villages you visit are very old and beautiful. The views again are incredible. We walked most of the time as we were close to the town. The walk down to the beach was lovely and only took 25 minutes. There's a sweet little cafe on route if you need a rest. Taormina was beautiful. Lots to see. Walking up and down Corsa Umberto was lovely with great restaurants and shops. Would highly recommend recommend a day trip to Savoca and Castelmola.
