View of the pond from the room and even better watching the sunset. Very comfortable stay and a well kept place away from the main road but just a short walk to everything in Unzen. The host Takashi-san is very kind and a wonderful person.

Outstanding hospitality. Gourmet breakfast and dinner. An incredible experience. I am allergic to fish and seafood and they adujsted the 8 course menu to accommodate me, while keeping the highest level of flavour and aestetics. This is an outstanding unique property if you like hot thermal spas. While I am not a fan of public bathing I found some hours when no one was there and I snuck in. What a luxury!!!! For next year I am getting suite with the private hot thermal spa so I don’t have to worry about the privacy. That having been said this place is six stars the service the food the Japanese ambiance and the entire experience is complete. I am an international traveler and I go to high end places only. This place was an amazing surprise in the middle of Unzen. I highly highly recommend it

We had in-room onsen, which was amazing. The public onsen was also good. Dinner in a private room for our party was delicious. The town is very convenient to the mountains and the rest of the Unzen part of the national park.

The location was perfect right next to Unzen Jigoku and waking up to the view outside our hotel room was peaceful and prayerful. The private onsen in the room was heavenly and we took advantage of it sometimes multiple times a day. The meals (breakfast and dinner courses) were delicious and gave us a wide range of Japanese dishes. It was also nice to be able to walk down in our Japanese PJ's to relaxingly eat and gaze out the window on Unzen Jigoku. The service was very attentive. The rooms were very spacious.

Spacious table-seating in the dining room, all tables having a view of the garden (really a park-like setting) and a menu that deserves an international rating at the highest levels, and that applies to both dinner (the landscape outside the glass wall is softly illuminated) and breakfast that offers Western coffee selections and the best of Japanese tea. We booked two nights and we were delightfully surprised to find that both the dinner and breakfast menus were varied. The wait staff and chefs paced the meal to our habits, and as English-speaking guests we never were challenged in communications.

They’re spot on with all the things that you’d want from a highly reputable hotel. The cleanness, great location with incredible scenery, amazing food and not to mention the ‘out-of-this-world’ service quality. For the price, I was very satisfied with the Ryokan experience at Azumaen. I certainly would recommend to others.

    Very good, affordable option in Unzen. The facilities are very clean, the room is traditional with futon and yukata, and the bath is nice. The pension does not have outdoor bath but there are many public baths just a few minutes away. The host is a very welcoming old lady, she prepares nice typical Japanese breakfast. Thank you! 😊🙏

    It’s advertised as a 3 star hotel but I think it’s more like a 5 star. The location couldn’t be better,(overlooking the national park), the facilities were amazing, the dining exquisite and the staff provided outstanding service. It was a wonderful experience.

    I really liked the authenticity of the place, it looks like we are transported back in time maybe 50 years ago during the boom of Japan economy. The hotel could use a little refreshing of the interior decoration but it is also part of its charm.
