Really interesting city with great options for visiting a number of natural and historical sites: 2.5 hours to Chavin de Huantar, 2 hours to glaciers and mountain lakes. The city is teeming with travel operators to take you there - there are also colectivos at your own risk. Lots of restaurants of various cuisines, including both tourist-focused places and more local ones. We even found some good vegetarian options - especially at Paulino's Indian and Casa de Zarela Thai.

Like Cusco and Lima, it was a crowded city of aggressive drivers constantly honking and spewing exhaust. Prices were higher than Cusco with less souvenir shopping. Maybe choose a place a little outside the town or another town that is closer to most of the day trips--it'll save u bus time too.

Huaraz is a great location as a base for mountaineering and hiking. At an altitude of 3000m you can retain your acclimatization there. There is a good supermarket Trujillo where you can get most food for the mountains, good restaurants with nice artisanal beer, stores with basic hiking equipment and gas. The town is chaotic but in a nice kind of way and seems to be safe.

A great base for trips out to the surrounding mountains.
A great base for trips out to the surrounding mountains. Lots of great trekking with stunning views and such a different range of scenery. Snow and ice with glaciers, or big crevasse strewn hills, or stunning big valleys with views over Huaraz. Lots of outdoor shops, lots of good places to eat and doesn't feel at all touristy.

Not really a nice city.
Not really a nice city. There is the Museum in the center of the city worth seing, with a garden of (real) Chavin stones.
Food is terrible. Almost all restaurants, expensive or unexpensive, only serve fried stuff with fried potatoes and eventually a sallad that I would not dare to eat. Alternatives are pizzas and pastas. But one does not travell up to the mountains to eat such kind of commercial food and so heavy.
We took a private car for a city tour at 5 p.m. He took us to various places. Interesting. We asked him if there was something to do in the evenings, like a cinema or a theater, and he said there was nothing going on like that in Huaraz.
It is a place to stop for starting a several days trip mounaineering or mountain walks, like to the mountains, or in our case we planned a 2 days trip to Chavin de Huantar (archeaology and nature).
People in Huaraz are generally speaking quite hostile, even locals to each other, prices are higher than in Lima (apparently there is much money circulating as the result of all the the mines around), service in restaurants and cafes is quite bad. What is offered, is in most cases is not what they really have once you start to order. If you have to go to Huaraz for starting your trip to the mountains or elsewhere, take it relaxed, stay cool, don`t expect too much and you will notice some little cool details here and there.
Lovely hotel in a good area of Huaraz, about 10 minutes walking from the plaza de armas. I loved the ambiance and decorations throughout the hotel, especially the top-floor restaurant and rooftop terrace, both of which are overflowing with plants and boast wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. Rooms are comfortable and clean, and staff are very helpful. Breakfast was excellent and best enjoyed on the rooftop terrace! Great spot to start a journey to the Ancash region!
The hosts are great. The location is great and we had a very nice time. We can to Huaraz to hike in the area and we're glad that we picked this place. From the Lazy Dog, we could go out walking to different trails. Otherwise, everything requires a car ride on very poor and bumpy roads. Besides the good location, it was a pleasure to know the hosts and meet other guests. It's a remote location so not everything works like it would in a city, but overall it was very nice.
This is one of the best places in Huaraz and I would love to come back everytime.
Everything was perfect, the garden is so beautiful and there are plenty of cosy corners so beautifully decorated. Lovely to chill in those warm days.
I loved the confi beds and most of them are with view to the garden. Very clean and comfortable.
The owners and people working there are so sweet and very helpful.
Thank you so much!!! The are also pet friendly!!! Bless you!!! 🙏😇
Excellent place to stay in Huaraz. We stayed there for a few nights before climbing Pisco and a few nights after. Staff is very efficient, any request was addressed immediately. The hotel owner is on another level altogether! He made us feel like we are staying with a very close relative. Met us warmly, helped to settle in the town, gave us many useful tips, dropped us to the bus station on our way back. Only good memories!
Huaraz is a jewel for hikers, and I found Akilpo Home the perfect place for enjoying my time at the most. The rooms are perfectly clean, quiet, with enormous beds which allow for restful sleep. The breakfast were delicious and abundant. The owners of the place are expert mountaineers, who are passionate about nature, respectful and kind. They gave me the most useful advices to plan my hikes.
Lovely family run hostel in Huaraz. The rooms are clean and comfy, breakfast is great (and varies per day), kitchen comes fully equipped and with free tea. The family is very friendly and accommodating. They can arrange most tours for you. Considering the price this is definitely one of the best hotels we stayed in during 9 months of travel.
We loved our stay here in Tony's house. The atmosphere is amazing and Carla the owner is an angle. She helped us with booking the agency for the Santa Cruz Trek or the bus for our following journey. She bakes the best pies and pizzas btw;) We wish you all the best Carla, thanks for making our incredible stay here in Huaraz possible.
This has been one of my favorite Hostal in Peru. A great vibe full of a lot of Avid hikers. A nice breakfast served every morning.
The staff were very helpful and happy to answer any of your questions. They were also very relaxed. It's really a perfect base for those looking to stay in Huaraz longer.
I highly recommend it.
I really enjoyed and liked my staying in El Jacal.
The rooms were always clean and organized. Breakfast good. It’s close to the city center.
Ricardo (the owner) was SUPER kind and helpful with me.
I got a credit card issue and he helped me a lot.
I’m super grateful for this experience in Huaraz and highly recommend!!!!!
I stayed months here in the hostel and had the best experience of Huaraz. I learned rock climbing here thanks to Omar and his friends for bringing me along with them. The hostel is full of good energy and meeting travellers makes the stay memorable. After a long day the terrace is the best place to hang out and relax
the room was simply furnished but functional. bathroom was clean. breakfast was great… with a fruit shake, eggs, bread and jam. coffee too!
the family were very helpful and kind. Very trustworthy. they even texted me to return to the hotel as I had forgotten to pick up my iPad when I left for the bus station.
Great location, owner will help you with tours and also very flexible with my departure time. Breakfast was also cooked by owner who made nice omelette!
Would recommend for families and solo travellers exploring the amazing landscapes of Huaraz.
The access to bikes was a game changer. Fidel and Rosa were so responsive, friendly and helpful. The location felt perfect, close to Huaraz for easy collectivo or taxi rides, close to many hikes, and in a perfect village of friendly people.
There's nothing to complain about the room and hotel itself, but what makes this place really awesome is the host Carlos. He's not only super helpful with organizing tours at the last minute, but also just a great and warm hearted person.
It is a family business. Owner went to the airport and took us to the hotel. We did all tours trough them. Walking distance about 15 minutes from main Plaza. Clean facilities and good price. We enjoy our stay!
Owner super helpful and knowledgable with planning your stay in Huaraz. The rest of the staff are very nice and helpful as well. Hostel is very sociable and meeting other travelers is easy and fun.
The apartment was clean and comfortable with lots of room and good facilities and also a dedicated utility room. The communal terrace on the roof provides lovely views over Huaraz.
