It is quite amazing to sleep, eat and relax inside a 12th century monastary. It is decorated and maintained in a very modest fashion, that brings the building to the foreground in a way that keeps reminding you of how monks once lived there.

The location is excellent and well situated in the heart of the Gerés Region. São Bernardo de Claravel offers very clean rooms, each with it's own wc/shower and comfortable beds (appreciated after a long day's hike or walk).
A shared kitchenette, on the lower level, is available to guests. It has a sitting/relaxing area, a microwave, a kettle, crockery, cutlery and a Delta Coffee machine (espressos, cappuccinos, etc at a fair price).
Visitors can enjoy the beauty of the region by visiting the rural villages, the stunning waterfalls, forests, hike, picnic, mediate at São Bento da Porta Aberta, enjoy massages at the São Bento Hotel and finish the day with sundowners on the Orange Tree courtyard which overlooks the Caniçada Dam.
A highly recommended holiday, especially for city dwellers who want to enjoy and be close to nature.
Featuring free WiFi and a sun terrace, Beira Rio do Gerês is located in the edge of Peneda-Gerês National Park.

Positive points: bed was really clean and had a nice smell. Good sheets. The bread at breakfast was really nice. We couldn’t hear the noise of the street and bridge inside the room.
