Brussel bíður: ferðavísirinn þinn

A diet of waffles, frites, beer and Godiva chocolates: sounds rich – and not just for your arteries. Known for its comics, peeing statues, NATO headquarters, blonde and brown pints, steaming mussels, and Art Nouveau, the “capital” of the European Union has a little bit for a lot of people.

Viðburðir í Brussel

Royal Palace
Get an insight into how kings really live. This grand building is the official residence of the royal family, and it does its best to look the part. From the outside, its long façade and manicured gardens hint at the luxury that lies inside. In the summer months it opens to the public and you can gaze at the gold trim and myriad chandeliers in the maze of halls and chambers.
Palace of Justice
If you like your monuments big and chunky, then the Palace of Justice is for you. This behemoth of the late 19th century is 104 metres high, and has a floor area of 26,000 m². These mega-dimensions make it the biggest courthouse in the world. It still functions as such, too – wander inside to get a sneaky peek at trials in progress.
Basilique Nationale du Sacré-Coeur
If you’re in town on a clear day, head straight to the Basilique Nationale du Sacré-Coeur. This massive Art Deco basilica boasts some of the best Brussels panoramas in the city. For a small fee, you can take the lift up to the viewing platform and drink in the 360-degree views over the cityscape. Just remember to pack your best camera.
Beer Planet
Taking advantage of the sunshine and planning a Brussels picnic? Then you’ll need to stop by Beer Planet before stocking your hamper. The range on offer at this specialty beer shop is quite mind-boggling, from dark Trappist beasts like Chimay and Westmalle to funky fruit beers like Mongozo Mango. Even beer sceptics will find something for them here.
Beer Mania
You know a shop takes its beer seriously when the owner not only has his own special brew, but also home-designed glassware specifically for it. Mea Culpa is the name of the beer in question, and the glass is both funky and unique. It’s not just about the owner here, though – there are over 400 other types on offer and, to top it off, a small beer garden in the back to sample your purchases.
Moeder Lambic Fontainas Bar
Brussels abounds with cosy joints to eat, drink and be merry. This is among the best of them. It’s got nigh-on 50 different beers on tap to cater for all whims and tastes. It also serves hearty platters of meats or cheeses to accompany the vast array of brews. On cold days, it’s cosy inside and when the sun’s out, the outdoor seating is a real plus.
Bier Circus Bar
Roll up, roll up to Bier Circus. This modern bar-restaurant is beer-crazy, serving up amber beers, blondes, dark beers and Belgian trappist beers for every occasion. Beer’s even made its way into the food menu in a big way, as many of the dishes use it as an ingredient. Ask the waiters for the right pairings and you’ll be well on your way to a happy, beer-infused meal!
The Belgian Beer Weekend
If you like Belgian beer, you’ll love the Belgian Beer Weekend – as you might expect, given the name of this event. This festival is held on the first weekend of September, in the charming setting of Brussels’ Grand Place, the city’s magnificent historic square. Against this beautiful backdrop, beer buffs congregate to sip and sample over 300 local brews. All in the company of people in historic costume to give it that old-time flavour.
Grand-Place
Map, camera, action! The King’s House, Town Hall and gilded houses set a baroque and Gothic-styled stage for the square. Tune into the choir of international accents around this visual treat. Eavesdrop on a nearby tour, where guides spin tales of lives long past. In its early years, the square was a market: hence the food-named streets (herbes, fromage) surrounding the site.
Manneken Pis
A two-feet tall, pissing cherub. That’s right. The urinating boy embodies the Belgians’ bawdy sense of humour. This little guy’s taken a lot over the years: he’s been kidnapped and dressed up in over 100 costumes. Relieving himself since 1619, the bronze statue has become Brussels’ unofficial mascot. Word is he once saved the city from burning with his anatomical hose.
The Atomium
An enlarged iron crystal, this symbol of science is enormous enough to be seen from most of the city. Created for the World Fair of 1958, the cellular design was made with many a metaphor in mind. Its nine orbs (one a restaurant, another an exhibition) symbolise the 9 provinces of Belgium. It’s also a nod toward transnational peace and the hope that science can save humanity.
European Parliament & Quarter
Don your suit and promulgate with the best of them. Here’s where elected EU lawmakers hold office. The tos-and-fros of “Eurocrats” makes Brussels the “capital” of the EU. Love law or just want to get up to speed on who’s making history? Guided visits and access to parliamentary hearings are available. Book ahead for a tour or stop by the Parlamentarium (visitor’s centre).

Teiknimyndasafnið í húsi Horta var æðislegt og enginn Brusselfari ætti að láta það framhjá sér fara - bæði safnið og arkitektúr hússins skemmtilegt. Við borðuðum á stað sem heitir M'Eating, bara einfaldur ekkert að panta en mjög góður matur og snyrtilegur staður.

Mjög gott
Mjög notalega borg, hefði þurft mun lengri tíma til að skoða áhugaverða staði. Gaman að borða krækling sem virðist mjög vinsæll á veitingastöðunum, gott verðlag.

Mjög gott
Ólíkir menningarhópar og einkenna borgina og gefa henni spennandi og um leið frekar áhugverðan svip. Fínir matsölustaðir víða og kaffihús. Fallegir garðar.

There are quite a few other tourists around but it isn't overcrowded and you can get plenty of sightseeing done we travelled to Ieper by train to see the ww1 trenches was a bit of a journey 1h 50m to get there but was well worth the wait

It's everywhere! Lots of beer shops with hundreds of Belgian beers and lots of bars serving amazing Belgian beer from the tap too.

wear comfortable shoes, have a map, get advice from the tourist information points in the Midi Station and the Grand Place.

The Grande Place at night, it's beautiful during the day but after nightfall it is amazing.
