Things to Do in Santa Marta

Tayrona National Natural Park
There’s a reason Tayrona is Colombia’s most popular national park. Within the massive expanse lie beautiful coastline, lush jungle and cactus-covered hills. You’ll find archaeological remains of the Taryona people, as well as sandy beaches lined with coconut palms and set against high mountains – just beware of the strong currents and only swim in selected areas.
Trekking to Colombia's Lost City
You’ll feel like Indiana Jones as you strike out towards Colombia’s Lost City. Hidden in the jungle for over 1,000 years, Ciudad Perdida is only accessible via a 40-km trail. You’ll hike in knee-deep mud and up steep cliffs, battling mosquitoes, bathing in waterfalls and sleeping under the stars – but it’s all worth it once you reach the eerie ruins of this centuries-old city.
Taganga is a tiny fishing village on the Colombian coast surrounded by desert mountains. It’s a lovely spot for relaxing on the golden beaches, and sampling fresh seafood and empanadas. The underwater life is robust, with colourful coral and tropical fish, making the town very popular for scuba diving – especially since PADI certification only costs about USD $300!

Very Good
Nice town to be visited in a day or even half a day, it is not a seaside resort as el rodadero but it is nice to be visited with its squares colonials palaces monuments churches and gardens. There is a little seaside promenade as well.

Except for beaches on the edges of town (Rodadero Beach was OK), the city lacks charm, even the historic area. People are very nice. The Gold museum is very good for local history. Use this town for your jumping off point to the exceptional parks around it. Airport is modern.

Santa Marta has a very cool vibe. From the great restaurants to drinking Ron on the street corner with a few locals, it has a safe and welcoming feel. We loved the updated feel with the colonial surroundings.

Santa Marta is an ideal venue to visit the surrounding areas but it is a very lively, loud and bustling place with heavy traffic in most areas. Much bigger place than we had realised. There is a nice area with bars and restaurants to escape the hustle and bustle.

Recommended in Santa Marta

Beaches near Santa Marta are mostly within Tayrona national park; and there many have strong undercurrents, meaning you cannot swim. You could go to the beach at Taganga, but that's now overrun by Gringos and not very pretty...

Great base location for adventures in Minca, Taganga, Parque Tayrona, and -- the best, Ciudad Perdida! I highly recommend the Lost City hike for the adventurous!

The city has a very good history and the buildings at the center are very historical.
