Things to do in Caen

Saint-Étienne Abbey
This magnificent Romanesque abbey is the jewel in Caen’s crown. Originally founded back in 1063 by William the Conqueror, it’s managed to survive nearly a thousand years intact. It’s here that William’s buried – though his remains weren’t so lucky, as his grave was pillaged a few times down the centuries. All that’s left inside is a thigh bone.
Abbey of Sainte-Trinité
The Abbey of Sainte-Trinité was founded in 1060, and housed young girls from the Norman aristocracy until the French Revolution – after which, the convent was transformed into barracks and later, a warehouse. Nowadays, the church is a fascinating place to explore, particularly thanks to its artful Norman Romanesque architecture.
Caen Castle
Built in 1060, Caen Castle holds its share of history. First a centre of power for major assemblies, it was later used as a medieval fortress and then as barracks – so you can expect many traces of the past on its ancient walls. Enter the castle through the classical drawbridge and, from the top, you'll get panoramic views over Caen.

kaen is a city that has a lot to offer for history lovers since it has an excellent museum for D Day. It is close to the 5 beaches of the allied invasion. Moreover it is close to Mt saint Michel and Honfleur. It has beautiful buildings and monuments.

Very good
Caen is an old city rebuilt after the war. There is an excellent and cheap bus service that runs to all points in the city. The Caen Memorial and museum is a must see experience. The D-Day beaches, museums and historical sites are a short drive away.

Exceptional
Caen is a great city to base your exploration of the surrounding area including Bayeux and the Normandy beaches. Caen also has a lot to see in it's own right - although watch out for the noon hour closures of museums, etc.

Nice, old city with many hidden spots. Getting around by car is a pain, especially downtown, but really that's an excuse to get out and walk. Easy access to other parts of NW France and not too far from Paris.

Recommendations for Caen

Our hotel was located about 5-10min away from a cluster of restaurants. All of them were good but the one that stood out was Café Marcel. The food, prices, and staff were so good that we ate there at least 3 of the 7 nights we were in Caen. Very high end food, friendly staff, and under 100 Euros for a family of 3 adults eating extremely well. The one place to AVOID was HIPPOPOTAMUS. While the food was good, the staff was rude and inattentive which isn't the norm outside of Paris. Also the prices were ridiculous. If you every wanted to know what it felt like to pay $150 for 3 hamburgers, fries, and cokes then this place is right up your alley. Every other place we went was amazing, so just avoid this one bad apple.

Just walk outside it was quiet when we were there no crowd. Me and my sisters family just took our time and enjoyed the sights.

Amount of time needed to really see the Caen Memorial Museum. Best museum I have ever been to
