Things to Do in Lecce

Santa Croce Basilica
As façades go, Santa Croce Basilica possibly has the most original you’ll ever see. As well as the traditional designs you’d expect to see on a church, you’ll also spot dodos, dragons and sheep. The centrepiece of this Baroque masterpiece is a Romanesque rose window, flanked by a pair of Corinthian columns. The interior’s heavenly highlights include a stunning Baroque altar and paintings of religious depictions.
Roman Amphitheatre
Set foot inside this portal into the past and imagine what it might have felt like being surrounded by 25,000 riotous Roman spectators. Situated in the central piazza of Sant’Oronzo, recent excavations of these historic ruins have unearthed original Latin inscriptions and friezes. It’s free to stroll around the perimeter at any time, with tours running from April through to September.
Lecce Old Town
Nicknamed ‘The Baroque Lady’ for its dazzling displays of architecture from this period, the old town serves up a multitude of fine examples. Strolling through Via Umberto I, you’ll come upon the striking Basilica of Santa Croce, which boasts one of the most intricate Baroque façades in Italy. Equally worth a visit are Sant’Oronzo Square and gardens of Villa Comunale.
Lecce chinese and history museum
The Museum is divided into two sections: the first one concerning the chinese culture and the second one dealing with Natural History.

Exceptional
Park and walk to reduce your stress levels! Give yourself plenty of time to stroll- it reminded us of Venice (without the canals!) as every corner had a beautiful church- walk around in the evening after the tour groups have gone- wonderful atmosphere - stunning.

Very Good
Beautiful old city but a nightmare when it comes to parking. The traffic is horrendous no matter what time of the day and even worse at weekends. On our first visit into the city we gave up, after sitting in gridlocked traffic on the outskirts

Lecce is a lovely old town to walk around with extraordinary carved stonework on many of the buildings. Its also a short walk to modern shops if required. There are plenty of good eating places of all kinds. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend as a place well worth visiting.

Lovely city to visit. A good mixture of culture in the old town and shopping opportunities in the commercial area. Lots of choice of restaurants.

It is a beautiful old town, with lots of little alleyways to explore. There is loads of cafe, bars and food places. The people we met were very friendly and no traffic in old town on a Sunday so you can wander easily.

Although Lecce is called the "Firenze of the South", it is too different for me to agree (I used to live in Firenze). Firenze is huge compared to Lecce and way more modern and busy, also a "must" and well known tourist destination. Lecce on the other hand is for someone who wants something slower, something with a pinch of Salento. It is hard to tackle as it is nothing so distinctive, but Lecce is calm and has a cozy and relaxed atmosphere.

The Church's and Museums are all must, some you pay for but only about 3-4 euros, and worth all to see so much ,with English notes. You need a good pair of walking shoes!

In Lecce itself plan to walk. There are lots of interesting places to go; just enjoy the architecture, shops and bars.

Visit in septet or October, weather is good and not so many people But few buses running and no day trips
