Things to Do in Monterosso al Mare

Footpath Monterosso - Vernazza
This three-kilometre stretch of the coastal trail that links the villages of Cinque Terre is thought to be the toughest – but it’s well worth it for the views. Walkers will pass olive trees, vineyards and citrus orchards, all the while enjoying sights of the pretty towns and breathtaking coastline. Depending on your fitness, it'll take an hour or two to complete.
Church of San Francesco
A short but steep hike up from Monterosso al Mare stands the striking striped exterior of the Church of San Francesco. Much loved by residents for its cool, peaceful interior, the 17th-century chapel is adorned with exquisite frescoes, carvings and artwork – including a Crucifixion scene attributed to Flemish Baroque painter Anthony Van Dyck.
Monterosso Old Town
Wandering the old town of Monterosso is akin to stepping back in time to an ancient seaside village. Dominated by the remains of medieval fortifications, its narrow cobbled lanes are lined with brightly painted houses, shops, churches and restaurants. Have a browse around, then watch the world go by in Garibaldi Square over a reviving Sciacchetrà – a locally produced sweet wine.

A good base for Cinque Terra. Trails to Levantine and Vernazza. Many restaurants and a good beach. Good train station for regional trains go to Pisa and beyond.

Monterosso is a beautiful place but the crowds were overwhelming. The trails were closed during my stay because of rain.

The beach was wonderful but shoes are a good idea for the stones. The restaurants were fabulous - make reservations for the best seats. The hiking affords beautiful views and are good work outs for the gluts.

Recommended in Monterosso al Mare

A lot of famous postcard like photos were taken from a hiking route (vernazza - monterosso al mare). You pay 7.5 euros for the entrance of the trail, walk from Vernazza bay area for about 20 mins towards Monterosso al mare then you will reach the photo spot!!(Promise you it really looks exactly like the post card!) All the other easier hiking trails were not open due to maintenance. Another good way is to take the ferry, photo of Riomaggiore from the ferry is amazing.

Being from Australia the beaches were nothing like we have at home in that you don't get sand, you get lots of pebbles. In saying this though the water was beautiful. It was around cool, but not cold and beautiful and clear, you could see for miles. You have to pay to use most beaches but the free ones are okay and you can still from the paying ones.

The scenery of the Cinque Terre is simply stunning. The high mountainous villages and the ancient coastal towns flanked but the iridescent blue of the Mediterranean is breathtaking

The beach was a great place to relax and swim on a hot afternoon. Water was warm and experience was refreshing - particularity after a long train trip.

Because their are no other options except the train between each town...give Corniglia a miss...after the other towns most disapproving

Sitting and gazing out the at the sea and sipping the house red wine from an outdoor balcony

Bring some snacks and water, wear sensible shoes and pace yourself!

Stuffed mussels, so delicious. Seafood risotto, so much seafood!

Clear, clean water. Great facilities if you'd like a lounge.
