Visit Siena: Your Travel Guide

Things to Do in Siena

Del Campo Square
Piazza del Campo is one of the biggest and most beautiful medieval squares in the world, so there’s no doubt every Siena visit needs to start here. Marking the centre of city life since the 1300s, it remains a bustling meeting point. Take in the strange, shell-like shape and get up close with the gorgeous fountain – you’ll find lovely views in every direction.
Del Mangia Tower
This would be a good time to overcome your fear of heights. Del Mangia Tower offers up some of the best views in the city and is a beautiful structure in its own right. Tackle the 400 steps for incredible panoramas of the cathedral, the piazza, the colourful rooftops and the rolling hills in the distance.
Siena Cathedral and Baptistery
Siena Cathedral is beautiful from the outside, but you’ve got to feast your eyes on the interior. Elaborately detailed, with a chapel by Michelangelo and floors and frescoes covered in colourful scenes, it comes together in a dizzying spectacle. Afterwards, don’t miss a trip to the Baptistery, a lovely church chock-full of elegant artwork.
National Picture Gallery Siena
Amongst the many works on display are Madonna of the Franciscans by Duccio di Buoninsegna, Madonna with Child by Simone Martini, the large altar-pieces by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, Altar-piece of the Carmine, by Pietro Lorenzetti, Annunciation by Jacopo della Quercia, and Madonna with Child by Matteo di Giovanni

Exceptional
A lovely, beautiful, and relaxing city. Be prepared to walk up and down hills. Marvelous Piazza - Il Campo. The Vicolo Osteria had the most wonderful, delicious, home cooked meals with friendly staff and family atmosphere - and was affordable. We returned there more than once.

Walk!! Take the road less traveled. And, go on a winery tour with Paola (pricey - 400 euro for two - but it was easily the best part of our trip in Italy). The views are surreal, the food is fantastic, and I could have stayed a week without getting sick of it.

A city with a vibrant local pulse where visitors are also welcomed. Explore the side streets not just the main shopping streets to find off the beaten path treasures.

The public fountains. Follow the tourist map, they are all marked and the supply of water is of vital historical significance to this amazing town - which does not have a river.

There is no way to avoid the crowds, relax and enjoy winding among the other visitors trying to find there way to the Duomo or the Compo. It's part of the fun.

The most beautiful Gothic cathedral i have ever visited. You will regret if you visit siena and don't go inside the cathedral i promise!

The outside is impressive but the inside is mind blowing. This is a cathedral not to be missed.

Why do you recommend Siena for food?

Great for wholesome traditional cooking as well as perfect pizzas

You have to try gino cacino, the best "panini" ever!

Beautiful small town, we went to experience the Palio.

Loose yourself and lose the map!!
