Coisas para fazer em Jelgava

Jelgava Palace
How about a history lesson over a cup of cocoa? This one-time Livonian Order castle now houses the Latvian Agriculture University, where the modern recipe for hot chocolate was invented. You can sip on a mug of sweet stuff and take a tour of the Baroque-style palace, visiting former imperial quarters from centuries past, plus crypts that hold 18 restored royal sarcophagi.
Jelgava Holy Trinity Church
After withstanding WWII, the tower of this church-ruin is the longest-standing structure in Jelgava. Today, it hosts exhibitions covering archaeological finds, national folk dress and civic celebrations of, amongst others, Latvian presidents – the surrounding Zemgale region has produced four heads of state. You can also clamber up the tower for picturesque city panoramas.
Academia Petrina
Founded as Latvia’s first university in 1775, the opulent halls of the Academia Petrina now host a museum that traces the city’s storied past. The exhibitions touch upon political and cultural developments, from the glory days of the Duchy of Zemgale to the town’s destruction during WWII. At the centre of it all sit paintings by Ģederts Eliass, a renowned rebel and Fauvist artist.
Pedestrian Bridge Mitava
Bridge is the longest pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Latvia. It connects city center with Pasta (Post) Island. On 15 November 2012, the reconstructed Jānis Čakste Boulevard and the new bridge Mītava were opened, which connects the centre of Jelgava with Pasta Island. The pedestrian promenade at J. Čakste Boulevard has two levels – parallel to the street and along the river's edge. The sightseeing platforms are located on the upper level of the promenade, which forms a 3 m high waterfall, while the 152 m long bridge is the longest pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Latvia. Due to its technical solution, it is considered to be unique in the Baltic States, it is a three-dimensional swan neck bridge with 28 bracing wires held by two pylons.
Jana Cakstes bulvaris
Pasta Island
A multifunctional place for recreational, cultural and social activities. On the island there are several children's playgrounds, during the winter months – a public skating rink, and in summer visitors can take a dip on the Post Island beach. At the far end of the island there is an explorative environmental area, divided into several areas: rural ranch, forest, marsh, meadow and field, as well as a spectators' platform on three levels. In the centre of the island there is an open-air stage in the form of an amphitheatre. In future it will be a place for the largest city festivals, such as the Ice Sculpture and Sand Sculpture Festival.
