Things to do in Liepāja

Liepāja's beach
Liepāja's beach has been a popular swimming location since the 1860s, when the Russian tsars and their retinues began to visit here. The beach is 50 to 80 m wide when the wind is calm, and it has white fine sand which amazes even those people who have been to the world's most famous beach resorts. After a strong wind you can find some pieces of amber washed ashore. Only be careful - occasionally you can come across the so-called "false amber". These are highly flammable pieces of phosphorus which got into the sea when the Soviet military destroyed phosphorus bombs in the seaside village of Pape 50 km to the south of Liepāja. Liepāja’s beach is the first one in Latvia that has been adapted to the needs of people with visual impairments and movement disabilities – a swimming area has been created, which is equipped with audio-buoys for the visually impaired and an adequate sanitation module for people with vision and movement disabilities.
Concert Hall 'Great Amber'
The amber jewel in Liepāja’s cultural crown is slated to open in the autumn of 2015, but its unconventional design is already making waves in this hip city on the Baltic Sea. The roundish concert hall, which is meant to resemble a piece of the prehistoric, semi-precious sap that washes up on the beach at Liepāja, is a welcome addition to city’s skyline which was previously dominated by a combination of medieval spires and 20th-century industrial smoke stacks. Follow its Facebook page for its grand opening and other upcoming events.

Liepaja Museum

The museum exhibition tells the history of the Liepāja City and its surrounding area from the Stone Age to the early 20th century. The museum also has on display an exposition dedicated to a wood carver Miķelis Pankoks (1894-1983) and two exhibition halls. Guided tours and different workshops of museum pedegogy for groups.

Very good
It's a great town with an amazing history. Not so much geared to tourism but that's half of the appeal. It's buildings are very interesting- old and quaint. The beach is stunning. Korosta prison is worth visiting.

It's a small town. The old wood buildings are interesting to see. On a Sunday afternoon/evening the town was completely dead, very few people were about, we felt lucky to find anything open to eat. It's probably more crowded on a warmer and sunnier day.
