Things to Do in Valletta

St John's Co-Cathedral
Equally significant as its counterpart – St Paul’s in Mdina – the inside of St John’s cathedral gives any art gallery a run for its money. Stepping inside, you’ll uncover an enviable collection of Carvaggio paintings and Flemish tapestries. Add to this a painstakingly finished marble floor, soaring painted ceilings and lavishly bedecked nooks and crannies –and you’ll be spoilt for choice for where to start.
Upper Barrakka Gardens
Looking onto Valetta’s Grand Harbour, these gardens are blessed with both beautiful lawns and panoramic views. Scattered amongst the foliage, you’ll spot statues of Winston Churchill and Captain Ball, Malta’s once-governor. Take the Upper Barraka lift from the city centre, for a swifter trip up to this city-centre oasis.
Parliament House and City Gate
Blending the old with the super-modern, this complex is a site to behold. Once the entrance to the city of Valetta, the City Gate leads on to a dramatic collection of soaring stone walls. Beyond the ruins of the old opera house sits an open-air theatre and the striking outline of Parliament House.
Fort Sant Angelo
Fort St. Angelo is the jewel in the crown of The Maltese Islands’ military heritage. According to legend, the fort stands on the site of a fortified Roman settlement.

Exceptional
The entire city is like an open air museum. Full of character at every turn. Art, history, culture, friendly people. A medieval capital city restored to its full glory. Always so much to see and do. And of course it's sunny almost every day.

This felt like a safe city to walk around, even in the evenings, for a single, oldish woman. Plenty of coffee shops and restaurants, not too many touristy shops and lots of interesting side streets to explore.

Valletta is steeped in fascinating history and easy to get to everywhere in Malta from it. Would recommend a trip to fort St Angelo. If you go to Mdina do not do the Mdina experience. Historically uninformative and a waste of 30 mins and 6 euros

Recommended in Valletta

Just walking the streets of Valletta, you can't help but feel the history - beautiful, well preserved architecture.

Upper and Lower Barrakkas Gardens - the old reference library off Republic Street, the Manoel Theatre, to name a few

All churches were beautiful, but the Cathedral at Valletta, Mdina & Mosta are probably the most magnificent.

It's not possible to avoid the crowds in Valletta. It's too small and too dependent on tourism for that.

the wonderful reference library off Republic Street - you'll need your passport for admittance

Booking.com asked travelers...

Why do you recommend Valletta for food?

Streat on strait street: amazing food, brilliant whiskey selection and fab cocktails

Everywhere - just wandering and exploring without a plan or schedule

Just wander! It's hilly but worth it!

Walk and take a harbour boat trip
