Visit Patong Beach: Your Travel Guide

Patong is a fascinating place. Like it loud? The nightlife will keep you up until dawn. Like it peaceful? Endless sun and miles of unspoiled white-sand beaches beckon. That's not to mention its mod-cons, intriguing culture, delicious seafood and a giant shopping mall. Go on, treat yourself!

Things to Do in Patong Beach

Jungceylon Shopping Center
Why shop at Jungceylon? The real question is why not – international and local brand clothing, restaurants, supermarkets, bowling alleys and cinemas that all vie for your attention here. This mall is a local favourite that covers almost quarter-of-a-million square-metres. Its centrepiece is a musical fountain with synchronised lights and sound that’s great for a quick snapshot.
181 Rat-U-Thit 200 Pee Road, Patong, Kathu, Phuket 83150
Open Monday-Sunday 11:00-22:00
Bangla Road
There’s risqué nightlife, and then there’s Bangla Road. This central strip leads from the beach to Jungceylon Shopping Centre. During the day, its shops and bars are geared towards a family-friendly expat clientele. But from 20:00 onwards, the entire vibe changes. Pink-lit bars fill with dancers and entertainers who specialise in adults-only entertainment.
Bangla Road, Patong, Kathu, Phuket 83150
Patong Boxing Stadium
“Fight night” is a bit like Patong’s version of the American “Superbowl”. This stadium is where the top Muay Thai boxers battle it out to jab, hook and roundhouse their way to a win. See the big event on Monday, Thursday and Saturday night. Visit any other time to train at the Muay Thai gym, or get an adrenaline rush from bungee jumping and riding on the mountain buggies.
2/59 Sai Nam Yen Road, Patong, Kathu, Phuket 83150
Open Monday 21:00-24:00, Thursday 21:00-24:00, Saturday 21:00-24:00
Phuket Simon Cabaret
Looks can be deceiving. Just ask the performers at this hugely popular local cabaret. Not quite ladies, not quite gentlemen, they’ve been wowing crowds since 1991 with their light, sound and costume extravaganzas. The performers lip-sync to sold-out crowds three-times a day, interpreting a range of pop songs with feline grace. Simon Cabaret is truly a Phuket institution.
8 Sirirach Road, Patong, Kathu, Phuket 83150
Open Monday-Sunday 18:00-21:00
Kalim Beach
Kalim Beach is wonderfully quiet. It’s a great escape from the bustle of Patong Beach, tucked away at the end of the main road as you head north out of the city. Although the beach itself is quite rocky, there are plenty of places to sunbathe with a good book (bring a towel or a beach chair) or to wade in the water at high tide. There are a few roadside food stalls too.
Patong, Kathu, Phuket 83150
Tri Trang Beach
Sun, sand and a massage – does life get any better than that? With the nickname “Emerald Beach”, it certainly doesn’t disappoint. It’s great for wading rather than diving, given the area’s craggy rocks. Most people visit for both the privacy and the shade – its lined with deciduous trees that shelter from the unforgiving Thai sun. Rent sun loungers, snorkels or jet skis on-site.
Patong, Kathu, Phuket 83150
Freedom Beach
Up for an adventure? This beach is hard to find, but worth the effort. A mere 10-minute long boat ride from Patong Beach, it’s a place to go for splendid isolation. Although the land is privately owned, the owners don’t charge for entry – just a small fee to rent a sun-lounger or to lie down on your towel! The beach is flanked by thick jungle that spreads back into the hinterland.
Patong, Kathu, Phuket 83150
Paradise Beach
A beach that really lives up to its name. This petite strip with swaying palm trees is just 15-minute taxi ride southwest of Patong Beach. The prime reason to visit is for its seclusion. You'll need to pay a small fee to rent a stretcher or to splay your towel. To make the most of your trip, rent some snorkelling equipment and check out the colourful coral below the surface.
Patong, Kathu, Phuket 83150
Flying Hanuman
It’s easy to get roped into some jungle high jinks here. Named after the famed flying monkey of Hindu mythology, this zipline offers a unique treetop experience. Built with eco-friendliness in mind, the attraction’s network of platforms, sky bridges and spiral staircases lets you witness the beauty of Patong Beach’s thick rainforest first hand, without spoiling the landscape.
Soi Namtok Kathu, Kathu, Phuket 83120, Thailand
Open Monday-Sunday 08:00-18:00.
Phuket FantaSea
Get tied up in Thai history. The country’s only “Cultural Theme Park” gives you a glimpse into Thailand’s rich culture. The live “elephant show” is a theatrical extravaganza. Watch as Thai dancers tell folk stories and legends through interpretive dance, moving with fluid grace. And yes, the dancing elephants make an appearance about halfway through!
99 Moo 3 Kamala, Kathu, Phuket 83150
Open Monday-Wednesday 17:30-23:30, Friday-Sunday 17:30-23:30

Probably more fun for the young than older people. Also helpful if you like hot weather and humidity. Lots of people, lots of shopping if you like to shop. The food is great. Take an umbrella to save buying one there! Also a good idea to research bargaining on price and tipping before going.

Just about three years ago, Patong Beach used to be quite a lively place to just chill and hang out, but this time I found the beach rather dirty. Besides the effort to clean up the beach was rather lacking. They even pack up the beach recliners as early as 1800. Karon Beach is much better

Patong has changed a lot during the past ten years. There is now a greater presence of both Chinese and Indian visitors. The local food is still great but the prices have increased. Still good value for money.

Stay away from people ask you for massage in the street, go to well known massage centers. Don't carry big cash or credit card, few thousands baht will be enough. Be careful from "Ladyboy" to touch your pockets. Don't drink and get hammered if you are alone.

although there's many touts it's nice to also have a beach close by which gets pretty quiet once it gets late

Transportation

Patong Beach Transportation

Air - Phuket International Airport

The island’s only airport, Phuket International Airport is most easily accessed by pre-booked taxi, either by your hotel or by reserving at the terminal counter. More reliable than picking up a taxi outside, you will pay between THB 550 and 700 here and receive a ticket. Drivers would expect a tip and the journey will take around one hour. Minivans and saloon cars for larger parties can also be booked, and there are plenty of car rental options in the terminal.

Tuk Tuks & Taxi

Tourists should have their wits about them when taking taxis and only use official cabs with a logo, the driver’s name and a registration number on the door. Air-conditioned taxis can be found outside hotels and are best for airport journeys. For getting about the city, Tuk Tuks are more commonly used. These colourful 4-wheeled vans sit 4 people on open-air benches. You’re best agreeing on a fare before you set off and city-centre journeys start at THB 100.

Motorbike Taxi

Motorbike taxis are generally scooters, rather than a larger style of bike, and can be found towards the end of the street and around shopping areas. Bikers wear brightly coloured vests showing the location of their home base. It’s a legal requirement to wear a helmet, so it’s best to make sure your driver offers you one, and that you agree on the price before you set off. City-centre journeys start at around THB 20-30.

Car

Daily car rental prices start at around THB 800 and rental companies can be found at the airport and along the beach. You’ll need to show your driving licence and passport, as well as pay a deposit. Don’t leave your passport with the company and instead provide them with a photocopy. Driving can be tricky and you’ll need to watch out for those on scooters, and be aware that parking is difficult.

Motorbike Rental

Most rental options are for scooters, costing around THB 200 per day with weekly and monthly hire also available. This is a popular way of getting about but recommended if you have previous experience of riding bikes. You’ll need to have a valid driver’s licence on you, in case you’re asked by police. Be aware that a lot of companies don’t have insurance, so make sure you have your own cover and that you only leave a copy of your passport with the rental company.

Walking

Patong Beach is an easy place to navigate by foot and its 2 main roads are connected by side streets. Walking from one end of the beach to the other will take between 30 and 45 minutes, using the promenade. The streets can get crowded but there are plenty of shops along the way. The city's nightlife and shopping areas are easily reached and covered by foot.
