Things to Do in Portland

Pittock Mansion
Once the family home of notable locals Georgiana and Henry Pittock, this 46-room mansion sits amidst a vast estate in the West Hills. Built in 1909, the Renaissance-style house is now open as a museum and tribute to Oregon gone-by. Take along a picnic and snack on your sandwiches in the gardens, with Portland sprawling out beneath you.
Portland Japanese Garden
For greenery and scenery in lively Portland, pay a visit to this 5.5-acre traditional Japanese garden. Made up of five sub-gardens that feature a tea garden and a strolling pond, it also hosts regular events, workshops and cultural celebrations.
Pearl District
You’re never short of perks in The Pearl. Once the ugly duckling of Portland, this area has been revitalised as a crossroads of culture, shopping and fancy real estate. The area is also home to Powell’s City of Books, which holds strong claims to be regarded as the world’s largest independent bookstore.

Great city for walking, beer tasting, people watching and food finding. The lite rail was fantastic. Renting a car for a day allowed us to go outside the city and see the coast and wine taste. I wish we'd had a few more days to enjoy nature and the surrounding area.

Has a little bit of everything; an artistically inclined major city, amazing coast, and beautiful mountain scapes close by. There is surprisingly a lot of activities that can be done for free also like nature hikes, national parks, and street fairs or festivals.

We checked out the Japanese garden and Rose garden in the Washington park area, it was so peaceful and beautiful. There was also a weekend marketplace at the McCall Waterfront area. Also, I highly recommend the frittwich with bacon at Cheryl's on 12th, if you're into brunch!

The motto of the town is 'keep Portland Weird'! Loved it..great coffee, transport, views, rock climbing and gliding. We also did a short pottery course. We hiked, drive around the Columbia river, admired the beautiful vegetation.

$28 gets you a 7-day transit pass ($5 for one day). You can even use your smartphone as a ticket. I never had to wait more than 15 minutes for any bus or MAX tram and the wait was usually 5 minutes or fewer. I never wanted to go anywhere there wasn't a stop within a few blocks and the trams looked modern and neat. The MAX even has an app that tells you how soon various bus/tram lines are coming. I could just walk on without having to insert the ticket into anything - I just had to have it handy if a ticket-checker came aboard and wanted to see it. But that only happened once in 5 days of travel for me.

The people are friendly, there's an awesome blend of city and nature in Portland - great ethnic cuisine whatever part of the city you're in! And you're close to some of the finest areas to hike in the country...

servers and store employees seem happy and everyone is extremely friendly - love it!!
