Things to Do in Johannesburg

Apartheid Museum
This arresting, informative museum is a must if you want to understand South Africa’s present, as well as its past. It tells the story of apartheid, the repressive system that reigned in the country right up to the 1990s. Allow a few hours to take in all the displays, especially the world-class Nelson Mandela exhibition.
Constitution Hill
This hilltop is the location for Johannesburg’s current Constitutional Court – as well as a former prison building with a chequered history. As a tourist spot, however, it makes for a fascinating visit. With the help of friendly tour guides, you can delve into the complex’s past through stories that range from the personal to the political.
South Western Townships
This township – commonly abbreviated to Soweto – gives you a taste of the real South Africa. It’s a proud district that’s economically underdeveloped, but with plenty of heart. Take a guided tour with a local to get a unique insight into the area that produced Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.
Rhodes Park
Rhodes Park is one of Johannesburg's flagship parks, named after Cecil Rhodes it features beautifull gardens, a lake and sports grounds.

Exceptional
Great visit to the zoo. Gold Reef City is a must! Construction currently on M1, adds to some problems with off ramps onto freeway. Easy to get transport when travelling around at night (With apps, usually a car is close by to get you after a night of partying)

Apart from the beach, Joburg has everything. The bad thing is that the "everything" that Joburg has, includes traffic. That's the worst thing about it.

We found it a very friendly city. Everyone we met were very helpful and proud of their city. We found the Citysightseeing Hop on/Hop off Bus a great way to get a feel of the City and visit the major attractions.

Booking.com asked travelers...

Why do you recommend Johannesburg for food?

The Food Scene in Joburg was vibrant and very happening with restaurants offering diverse range of food and new creative chefs on the scene. Even more exceptional, were the lower than expected prices which provided an outstanding dining value that rivals most other places in the world.

Amazing how the gold rush took away the sparkle from Kimberley - Amazing township life in Soweto.

in an hour distance you can visit some very nice sites like the cradle of humanity:)

Museums presented a very engaging and emotional depiction of the horrors of apartheid

Large, accessible shopping malls. Reasonable prices and large variety

Only that it is not as bad as the other major Cities

Thai restaurants, excellent night life
