Hot-spring baths are featured.... The dinner was amazing. We were feeling lazy so opted for it even though it was a little on the expensive side as far as we were concerned. However it was amazing and well worth the money spend. Highly recommend that if you stay here you order dinner at least once.

Located in Yamanouchi, 2.6 miles from Jigokudani Monkey Park, ZEN Hostel provides accommodations with a shared lounge, free private parking and a garden. I am so happy we chose Zen. I spent a long time debating over which place to stay on our trip to see the snow monkeys and snowboard at Shiga Kogen, and I'm so glad we stayed here. Everyone who works here speaks English as a native speaker. Even the owner speaks English really well. They were so kind and accommodating of our daughter's special dietary needs. Our family of five fit well in the quadruple room and we came prepared with pajamas for the cold nights. The town is nice and the Hostel is so close to the bus and train station, just a five minute walk, also right by the convenience store and the D-Line restaurant (which has pizza and pasta and taco spring rolls which my husband says are the best things he's eaten in Japan). The hostel itself also has dinner, and I had the best salad I've ever had here. (Also apple pie and ice cream.) My kids loved running around and exploring the place, and especially loved the hidden bathroom behind the bookshelf in the common area, near the wood stove and the gym with the horseback riding exercise machine (no idea what that's called). We really, really enjoyed our stay and are so thankful to the staff for being so kind to us. The snow up on the mountains is incredible (so don't lose hope if you arrive here and there isn't any snow, even if you're not here to ski, take the bus at least as far as Sun Valley and you'll see a winter wonderland). We would really like to come back in the green time too, and go hiking and try the ninja park.
