Paraty is surrounded by emerald green forests attached to mountains that plummet directly into turquoise waters or white-sand beaches. The cobblestone streets and colonial houses of the city centre pay homage to its Portuguese roots, and accessible islands and secluded beaches lure the sun-seeking crowds.
White buildings decorated with colourful door arches and window surrounds line the small lanes of the historic old town. The 17th-century First Church of Our Lady of the Remedies watches over the shaded eastern meeting point of Matriz Square.
North of the canal are Pontal and Jabaquara beaches that are split by the Perpetual Defender fortress, built by the British in the 18th century. Hiring a boat will take you out to more remote islands like diving hot spot Ilha dos Meros or unspoilt Paraty-Mirim Beach, south of the city.
As part of Brazil’s Costa Verde coast, the nearby Gold Trail and Serra da Bocaina National Park highlight the native Atlantic forest and fauna such as the sloth.

It’s a must see for any visitor or even Brazilian. A beautiful town with a historic center. The city has various nice restaurants (but usually quite pricy) and shops. Since it’s not in the mountains, it’s easier to visit than for example ouro preto.

I think 1 or 2 nights is just right. It is nice to do a layover in Paraty because on the bus ride to and from (Rio/Sao Paulo) you can see quite a bit of the smaller towns and nature. If you did a bus direct from SP to Rio it would stick to the main highways and you wouldn't see as much. Worth a visit if you have time but keep in mind everything will be slightly more expensive as local tourists also like coming here. There are also lots of festivals so depending if you like festivals you could time your trip to coincide with one of them. During my stay there was a gastronomy festival which was pretty cool. They had cooking demonstrations and free samples of stuff.

Paraty is nothing more than a tourist trap and scam. It is just 4 streets of colonial buildings with arrogant people. It is marketed extremely well as you believe that Paraty is a village of only colonial buildings however to our surprise they have added (obviously quite some time ago) more buildings and a bigger village the new town shall we call it. It is full of homeless people and danger the floor is disgusting and the people are intimidating. I love Paraty, and I always come back there.
I love Paraty, and I always come back there. The city is quaint, charm, small. The Historic Centre, old from the discover of Brasil, with stone streets. This year i went to the Bourbon Jazz Festival, and it was amazing. In Paraty there are delicious restaurants, ice cream shop (O Finlandês and Pistache best ones in my opinion). And i would like to have more time to go around with boat (I just did 1 tour with the boat)and I went to a trekking (pão de açúcar)- Ride to in Parati Mirim and from there 20 min by boat. The receptionist Pedro was really helpful, specially recommending an amazing private boat tour. Overall, a great experience with better cost benefit than the hotels in the city historical centre.

Lis, the owner, is one of the kindest, sweetest people you will meet. She greeted us with a warm smile, and kept it throughout our entire stay. My aunt and I found the location to be perfect. We could enjoy the excitement of the historical center of Paraty in a five minute drive, and come back to the peace and quiet of Casa Clara.

It's a little away from the historic centre which is about 5-10 mins away. This can be an advantage though, as the centre has cobbles which are very difficult to walk on!
