It has a very laid-back, beachy vibe… There are lots of different places to eat with a big variety of choices, and numerous beaches and activities, and several markets, as well as roadside fruit stands to purchase food from.

A true jungle experience in a calm secure, laidback and amazing environment! Amazing little restaurants, beautiful beaches ! Much prefer this Caribbean Coast than the Pacific. Just rent a bike to move around or take a Tuktuk. Fruit markets on the roadsides!

Clearly a place for a younger crowd than us 70+ year olds but that didn't get in the way for us. Always treated well. Great to have such an international mix of people. Great food options, again with a mix of cuisines. With modest efforts you can arrange individualized itineraries for the sights. Infrastructure (local transportation, streets/roads, sidewalks) could benefit from updating - always a challenge in crowded, somewhat remote areas.

Charming Caribbean town, friendly
Charming Caribbean town, friendly
people, fun restaurant and entertainment options However, all gringo eateries are vastly overpriced. Avoid all the fancy places, totally not worth it. Exorbitant prices for nothing special. Opt for the few, but better, luncheonettes instead. Beer, not wine.
Loved Riquisimo! Be aware that different taxis charge different rates for the same trip, because they can haha! Chill! ;-)

This location is crowded with lots of traffic.
This location is crowded with lots of traffic. There’s trash alongside the roads and it’s very noisy at night. You must get up early to find a spot on the beach and the waves can be very rough and unsuitable for swimming just about anywhere. It is also far more expensive than we had remembered compared to our last trip vs the Pacific side.
If you must go to Caribbean side of Costa Rica, stay closer to Punta UVA or Manzanilla away from the crowds.
Where to eat in Puerto Viejo: La Nena, Zaika, Lidia’s Place, Tambie Bros, and Pizzeria Pulcinella.

A great laid back type of caribbean seafront.
A great laid back type of caribbean seafront. Good bars and a hippy vibe.
Some decent supermarkets in town and on the road out to Manzanilla.
The bar in the Puerto Viejo Hotel on Friday night is a must.
Very friendly and helpful staff.
A lot of activities in the hotel itself, so there should be something for every one: two pools (one on the beach with music & bar, one quiet one for relaxing), a billiard table, dance classes, cooking classes, live music.
Great location, there were a lot of activities we could do in close proximity: visiting the town of Puerto Viejo, animal sanctuaries and rescue centers, BriBri waterfalls.
Tasty breakfast.
Sloths came to the hotel territory almost every day, which was very cute.
The property is brand new with beautiful design and tasteful decor. It’s located in a beautiful semi-hidden quiet spot with a jungle feel but also near a quiet beach. During our short stay we were able to see multiple varieties of animals just around the hotel. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. I liked the small size of the hotel with limited number of rooms.
I would totally recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a beautiful quiet spot surrounded by nature and wildlife.
Very good location, Puerto Viejo is a small town and Pagalù hostel was 2 minutes walk away from the bustle of the beach, restaurants and bars. There is a supermarket nearby which is great for buying food and drink for cooking. There were hot showers which are always nice no matter the climate. The kitchen is well equipped and very clean, there is a nice social space. Jared on the reception was very helpful and assisted with preparations for visiting the nearby Cahuita National Park.
Not worth the money what they are asking for a night. It is definitely not a 4 or 5 star hotel. I stayed one week. The best about this place is the beach Playa Negra which is just few steps away. Food in the restaurant wasn't even mediocre. You can easily find truly luxurious hotels with the same money in Puerto Viajo. I didn't notice what the gay friendliness meant, waiters were all as robots as one can be. There are, you know, a difference asking How are you and How are you.
Chris and Mati are lovely hosts! They helped and advised us a lot. Whole place has chill vibe, rooms are basic and definitely not soundproof but that's a part of a charm. Location is one of the best in Puerto Viejo, beautiful beach right next to the hostel with a sloth hanging near the entrance! Garden around is stunning and even without going out you can see lots of animals and plants. Price is really reasonable and coffee made by Mati in the morning was delicious!
A great place to stay if you want to be in the place of action (Puerto Viejo) but still isolated from the noise and crowds. A small hotel, very well designed around the pool area, with lots of of beatuful greenery, that almost makes you feel like you are in the jungle. Staff was very friendly and helpful, always ready to help with organizing transportation, tours or anything you might want. Breakfast was great, rooms kept very clean. We enjoyed our stay very much.
Located about a 5 minute walk from the town center of Puerto Viejo, we loved coming back to the property and sitting outside in the beautiful garden. There are also two cats that live on property who warmed up to us very quickly.
We are learning Spanish so it was a relief to be greeted at the front desk in English. The tile work throughout the cabinas property is beautiful, and the outdoor showers were perfect after a day at the beach!
The hotel’s location is excellent. It’s situated in the city center and is within walking distance of a beautiful beach. The design of both the garden and our room is very appealing. From the room, you can observe wildlife, including land crabs, agoutis, and birds, which makes you feel as if you’re in the midst of nature. Additionally, the passion fruit mousse from the dinner menu is a must-try.
The breakfast was always delicious and abundant. Close to beaches and good restaurants. Far from Puerto Viejo which is fine because once the traffic hits, it's impossible to cross the one-way bridges. The howler monkeys are by far the best who like to eat the little nuts off the tree and then drop them on the tin roofs. LOUD - you would think it's raining. LOL
Indalo Hotel is a family business and hotel is located in the center of Puerto Viejo, so you have walking distance to shops and restaurants. We have very good contact with the owner prior our arrival. Staff was very helpful during our stay. The room is really spacious and comfortable (with air-condition). Hotel provide access to the pool and quite zone.
Loved the property, excellent location in beautiful Puerto Viejo right on the beach. Have an excellent 4 days and the staff was amazing who did a great job in being accessible and putting on thoughtful events and ice breakers to ensure the guests mingle
The location in the rainforest and near to the wild beaches is what make this hotel very appealing. Very calm and soothing place. Extremely helpful and friendly staff. Very good pool. We had a great time there while working and visiting places nearby.
Beautiful hotel in a fantastic location. The staff were excellent and welcoming and the breakfast was very good. The hotel is close to the amenities in Puerto Viejo yet it is also very quiet and peaceful. The pool area was lovely and well maintained.
Simply fantastic hotel in Puerto Viejo. The vibe is delicious, the breakfast is incredible, the pool is very comfortable, and you are within walking distance of several beaches. The shower is also unbelievably good. Definitely recommend.
Lovely stylish house in a safe & quiet neighbourhood near the beach and a few kilometers from Puerto Viejo away.
Very friendly & helpful people. We enjoyed the great veranda & the wonderful garden.
everything was exceptional. I can surely say that this is one of the best hotels in Puerto Viejo, Cocles, Punta Uva and Manzanillo.
It has everything you need for an amazing experience.
Ideal location near the town of Puerto Viejo. Such a unique building, lots of lovely personal touches. John and Eric are excellent hosts. Really enjoyed the outdoor aspect of the villa.
Cabinas Tropical is in a great location near Puerto Viejo and also has hammocks and outdoor seating in front of each room. The staff was very helpful with calling taxis.
The hotel has nice atmosphere. It is located directed to the beach in a quiet place. The breakfasts were delicious. It was 5 min by car to the center of Puerto Viejo.
