The Troodos would be a bit bland and dated if it were a city-centre hotel, but it does ‘cosy mountain lodge’ very well. The rooms are unremarkable and seem out of the 1980s or 1990s, but they’re well maintained. The best things about the hotel are the communal fireplace area, the excellent restaurant with generous servings (most customers seem to go for steaks but there are good vegetarian options too) and marvellous buffet breakfast. Come the evening, when everything else nearby is shut, the place really does feel like a warm, snug haven. The location on Troodos’s main street is handy, just a couple of minutes’ walk from the start of the Atalanti trail, the Troodos Visitor Centre and served by buses (Limassol, Kakopetria and, at weekends, Nicosia). The hotel also tries to help hikers with bike rental and maps, and runs its own shop for snacks etc next door. No wonder it’s clearly popular with tour groups, independent travellers and locals, especially at weekends.

The restaurant food and breakfast choice were great. There were only two gentlemen working the restaurant floor in the evening and they did exceptionally well. The Troodos trout was delicious, as were the Cyprus potato chips, the chef did well too!

Everything was good except there is no air condition and on the sunny side the room is very hot in the daytime. Extra vacuum cleaning wouldn't harm, I felt the room had a bit dusty air.

The hotel was conveniently located next to the bus stop, the start of several trails and ... the tourist shops (which come handy if you need to buy bottled water or a snack). The buffet breakfast was plentiful and excellent, perfect for a hiker's day and it took place in a large sun-drenched room with a sweeping view. The staff was nice, the bar was convenient for a snack, especially with the rather cool Spring weather.
