The attached tower has served as a laboratory to a well known English alchemist, Edward Kelley. Kelley claimed to possess the secret of transmuting base metals into gold, the goal of alchemy, as well as the supposed Philosopher's stone itself. There are also rumours about William Shakespeare visiting Kelley in his laboratory.
