Commonly known as just Freiburg, Freiburg im Breisgau is equally popular under a different name: the Jewel of the Black Forest. Located at the foot of the Schlossberg hill in the Baden region, the city is best known for its 15th-century university and local vineyards.
Popular for its high quality of living and serving as an entry point to the beautiful Black Forest, Freiburg is the sunniest and warmest city in Germany. The inner city is crossed by plenty of charming canals and if you happen to fall or step into one, the locals say you will marry a Freiburger, so be warned!
Don’t miss the stunning Münster cathedral with famous gargoyles and a tower with spectacular views. It’s built with the red sandstone popular in the area, similar to that used in the Gothic Historical Merchants Hall, also worth a visit.
Strolling down the city’s charming streets is a very pleasurable experience and you can stop in one of the many cosy cafés and little restaurants and enjoy a glass of the local wine or a pint of German beer.
Whether you fly to Euroairport Basel/Mulhouse/Freiburg, or even nearby Zurich Airport, you have a wide choice of accommodation options available at Booking.com: from well-equipped hotels to comfortable apartments.
Great University town. Seemed safe even at night. Ate in a variety of places including the market at Munster plaza. Great experience. Getting around is easy and quick because of the good tram service. Not very crowded. Weather was a little unpredictable.

Freiburg has so much history and a beautiful shopping district with a lot of restaurants very close to transportation. The food is amazing and it is so easy to get around in Freiburg. The people are so kind and very helpful. It is very important that you remember that all shops are closed on Sundays, with the exception of most restaurants. Be sure to have Euros on hand for this day, as a lot of places do not use credit cards. Check out City Park and get awesome views of the city from the tower, easily located by taking Landwasser to the fourth stop at Am Bischofskreuz. It's behind the Studentensiedlung am Seepark or the "Stussie," which is student housing for Freiburg. You have to try the tea and delights at the Turkish bakery, Sevgin. It is just a short walk from the main train station. You will not be disappointed.

Freiburg is a very nice city with a beautiful cathedral in the main square. There are a lot of pubs, restaurants and typical German breweries where everyone can find the original taste of southern Germany. Very good nightlife. The city is located at the border of the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) which is really worth to visit.

Loved this city, as I was working from my computer, I needed strong wifi so I chose Freiburg im Breisgau as the base to driving out to different hikes. I would have stayed in a smaller town in the Black Forest though if I had the chance, one that was closer to hikes or was a spa town like baden-baden.

Freiburg is the largest city in the south western area of...
Freiburg is the largest city in the south western area of the black forest.
It is fairly small however and the old town center which is in my opinion the only place that should be visited and stayed at is even smaller - you can probably see everything there is to be seen by foot with small kids in 1 day.
However, the atmosphere in the old town center is great and it is a beautiful center and is well worth visiting. I would recommend at least 2 nights to fully appreciate and enjoy it casually.
However, if you are looking to explore the black forest for a week I would advice to sleep somewhere else(maybe in a farm or some place in the smaller villages around) and only coming to Freiburg as a day trip.
Keep in mind that other than the beautiful old city center most of the city is unpleasant to be in with children and there are quite a lot of immigrants at the outskirts of the city. If you are no bothered by it than you should ignore this last paragraph.
Enjoy

Breakfast spread was great with the option of waffle grill and fresh fruits. Rooms were clean. Parking at the hotel is expensive at EUR15 per night. I think these should be built into the price of the rooms to avoid hassle. The hotel is 2.5kms away from Freiburg centrum/Bahn. The front desk is great and available 24x7. My 7 year old daughter woke up mid-night hungry and we walked down to the front desk/Bar, who were happy to make a Pizza for her at 1am. She was very happy :-)
The hotel's location was perfect. You can see all of Freiburg from above and many hiking trails are right next to the hotel. Bike rentals are available and we cycled in the Black Forest's trails and even took them all the way to the city center. Very enjoyable.
Moreover, for two days in a row, I opted to eat dinner in the hotel's restaurant rather than elsewhere. Comfortable setting, delicious food (I ate the Sea bass two days in a row), and attentive staff.
The Check-in time specified was 3pm but we had reached Freiburg at 11:30am so our plan was to store our luggage at the hotel's luggage storage and head out to roam the city and then come back later in the evening for checking in. But when we reached the hotel at around 11:30am, they allowed us to check-in right away which was a pleasant surprise for us. The early check-in really helped us freshen up from the journey to Freiburg before heading out into the city.
I had great stay at the FT Hotel. Location is a bit outside of Freiburg, but its easy to reach with the tram. The hotel is located in a very green area, its quiet at night. Because of a holiday, there was no reception, but I could get my keys from the key safe. Rooms have a good size and are well equipped. The balcony is a nice bonus. Breakfast was decent, nothing too exciting but filling none the less. Would stay again, very recommended.
The staff was very friendly and helpful, and they made me feel welcome and comfortable. The room was lovely, modern, and very clean. The bathroom was modern and well-equipped. The hotel also had a great location, next to a tram station and close to a super market and a mall. I think it was a great value for money, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Breisgau.
The hotel is a bit old, but in a nice and green location. It is outside the centre of Freiburg, but with good regular tram connection. The bathroom was shared, but there were three options and clean. The cafe at the hotel was closed, but there are options to eat in the village which we didn't use. There was no water boiler in the room but provided when we asked.
This hotel gave us a large, nicely decorated room with ensuite bathroom. It was chosen due to proximity to a meeting the next morning, but is a bit outside of Freiburg am Breisgau. There is a restaurant in the building which was very nice for dinner. Parking was free. The building was reminiscent of the older German hotels, but it was in great shape.
I booked a junior suite, as the price was comparable with other double hotel rooms in Freiburg on this date and I loved it! The room was really comfortable and the jacuzzi a real treat.
The staff were friendly and the location great. I would stay in the room again :)
It was a delight to stay at Hotel Bären Garni. The owner was so helpful and friendly and gave us many suggestions for our trip to Freiburg. It is easy to travel by tram to the centre and the beautiful Seeburg Park is nearby. We would definitely stay there again.
Friendly staff, spacious room. Good breakfast. 20-minute bus ride from Freiburg train station - bus stop outside the hotel, so no problem to leave the car at home. 15-minute walk from 'Schönberg' - vineyards / forest / hills with plenty of hiking trails.
The Hotel is super centrally located, close to the train and tram stations as well as to the old town. The building is quite historic and looks super elegant inside. You can visit the rooftop which is also nice and the breakfast buffet is good.
This hotel has a great location in a quiet street, just a few 100m from the old city of Freiburg and connection to the bus/tram network. Very clean & comfortable rooms with everything needed for a short stay.
The hotel is centrally located and has a lift. Our room was very spacious and had beautiful parquet flooring. We could park next to the hotel for a fee. The beds were comfortable.
Simple, cozy hotel in the heart of Freiburg. Steps away from the shopping area and walking distance to many, many points of interest.
Staff all very friendly.
