The German town of Konstanz is located on the shores of Lake Constance, whose waters define the borders between Germany, Switzerland and Austria. With a medieval feeling, the Old Town mixes narrow cobbled streets and squares with colourfully decorated houses, some of them more than 700 years old.
With settlements in the area dating back to the Stone Age, the ancient town of ‘Drusomagus’ was founded by Romans around 50 AD, with the name ‘Constantia’ first appearing during the 4th century. Since the Middle Age, the city grew as an important spiritual and trade centre, something noticeable in its prominent old houses. Some of the best hotels, guest houses and B&Bs in Konstanz are located in historic houses.
Each first Friday from May to October, shops in the Old Town remain open till late, and it iin possible to with ll prtesent uch as the renowned s possible to enjoy lively evenings with open-air shows and music. Konstanz is a fabulous place to visit. Ferries seem to be crossing the lake even in winter, there are thermal baths (Thermen) with views of the foothills of the Alps, the old town is beautiful, and you can walk along the lakefront. Snowy times must be beautiful here - I've see fabulous pictures of this (and the Christmas market has been recommended to me). Just before Lent there is the fantastic Fastnacht festival, which is a wonderful family occasion, including the Saturday morning children's parade (and gathering on the Markstatte), which is less crowded than the Sunday one (one tip for the larger Sunday event is to walk to the start of the parade area where it is less crowded and where little ones can see better). In summer there is swimming in the lake, a large open-air swimming pool with slides, right beside the thermal baths, the floral peninsula of Mainau, the wonderful Reichenau pensinsula with its monastery and walks, and trips to local sights by train and ferry. Cycling is easy, and there are city bikes (and in February 2024 also scooters).

I love Konstanz.
I love Konstanz. It is quiet and peaceful walking along the waterfront. If you are a cyclist or a runner, there are tracks around the water. You can also get the ferry to Friedrichshafen.
The old town is very quaint and has lots of nice restaurants and bars. It is also pretty good for shopping and has a very good Zalando outlet.
The modern part of the town, the other side of the river has a street of big hotels that are decent, but the area is not pretty at all (nothing like the old town). You can walk around 3kms to reach the old town or your hotel will give you vouchers for free buses.

We chose Konstanz because it has a Christmas market and to be a base for a certain amount of travelling around. The market (which runs daily) was large and lively, drawing crowds from all around . The city repays wandering round, with a good range of historic buildings and shops large and small. During Advent, some events - notably concerts - appear to be mostly confined to weekends, but there is a good multiscreen cinema. It was easy to take the ferry to the wonderfully atmospheric castle at Meersburg or the train down into Switzerland to visit the UNESCO world heritage library at St Gallen (ask at the station how to get the cheapest travel deal).

Our main attraction was the gardens on Insel Mainau: superb but go early in the day. Kontanz itself offers a large pederstrian zone in the Old City. The many fine buildings from 1870 to the First World War testify to a prosperous past. We saw no very modern buildings due to war dammage, which gives the Old City a cachet in comparison to othe German cities. We arrived by ferry, which was very special. The area abounds with fruit trees and vineyards. We found the local white wines very refreshing.

Beautiful town. Overcrowded.
Beautiful town. Overcrowded. A bit dirty especially around station. Traffic is a nightmare. Overpriced hotels Too many dogs 🐕 on vacation with their owners and in restaurants and hotels. Not nice!! Outdoor dining with self services was good and cheap but not great quality. Old town was great
We visited this hotel in February 2024 and this hotel is is a brand new. It was a wonderful stay here. Man at the front desk was very helpful - when we wanted to arrive a while after midnight - it was not a problem. I just call to the reception and everything was set up. The have reception 24/7. This hotel is near the Swiss boarder and is well situated when you want to walk to the centre of Konstanz (it is only 20 minutes walk). We would definetely stay here again.
The room was clean, comfortable, and warm. The ventilation worked well - the room remained dry despite the humidity level in the air. The room is spacious for two people. The hotel is located opposite the train station and the waterfront, right in the city center. It's a convenient place for walking and enjoying the city. Parking costs 25 euros per day near the hotel.
Quirky old villa turned hotel directly on the lake shore. Beautiful views and the location is unbeatable.
The manager was extremely helpful and welcoming, despite the obvious post Covid struggles that many hotels are dealing with. We were lucky enough to get a free upgrade to a lake view room and I can’t recommend enough booking this room when having the choice.
Exceptionnally friendly staff. The owner even stayed up longer to still welcome me at the reception despite my late arrival.
Felt extremely welcome.
The room design is fabulous, nicely themed around the world of water. Many wooden styles made it feel warm and cozy. there was even a sauna in the suite.
Nice and clean modern apartment. Large shower.
Kitchen well equipped. No toaster or microwave.
Nespresso machine and fully stove/
ofen, refridgerator.
Great TV and nice balcony. Private parking right in front of apartment. Quiet neighborhood, corner store 5 min walk .
Super.. i recommend this apartment it was near the train station, lake and city center.. The room is very nice and clean.. surprisingly the linen, pillow and bed are very comfortable, clean and smell nice.. its like a small Home.. you will have your own privacy
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful with understanding the local area. They even provided us with dining locations and public transportation information based on our preferences. I recommend this hotel to those unfamiliar with the area.
Really lovely informative staff. Very welcome on arrival. Breakfast was good with lots of options. Access to public transport was easy, and the hotel had a very good bike store. Close to supermarket, a restaurant or two and the waterfront.
The location is excellent, literally across the street from the main train station in Konstanz. Hotel staff were all friendly. We were able to leave our bags at the reception after we checked out very easily. Our room was huge.
Wonderful place to stay for families. Breakfast is wonderful and staff is so friendly. It’s possible to reach city center with public transportation easily, and hotel gives you a public transportation card as long as you stay.
The surrounding area was great as the lake was 5 minutes walk. The room in general was good. Bus stop good, but only while going to the city as it was right in front of the hotel.
Hotel was okay. Service was great. Room could have used better linens, more towels. My friend's room had more pillows and blankets and I found myself wanting the same.
The hotel staff were very friendly. The room was clean and comfortable m.The breakfast was good with a lot of fresh products as others have mentioned .
