Sehr vielfältiges Frühstücksbüffet, sehr kinderfreundlich

Gengenbach itself is a very small little town but quite cute. The food is predominantly Italian - still don't know why. In town itself I don't think you need more than a day, but you are close to Strassburg and several other small towns, hikes and wineries nearby.

We chose Gengenbach as a base as it was easy to get train to other places and go for local walks. It is a pleasant village which is quite picturesque. It is not touristy. There are quite a few restaurants. Menus only in German so make sure you have a phrase book!

What an amazing village and the location of the property was perfect. In the evenings the entire family (8) met at the cafe owned by the property owners and had ice cream, dessert, wine and or beer. DELICIOUS!! It was a lovely way to end each day. We all want to come back!

This is a small friendly town with lots of dining options, a museum, a night-time tour of the town with a historical talk by the Nachtwaechter, beautiful church. In December the Rathaus is turned into the "world's largest Advent calendar."

A real Schwarzwald Town with all the 'old' buildings. Loved it.
Restaurants open at 6pm for evening meal.
Traditional German food, but also Italian. Not sure about other food types. Backery and Ice Cream open all day.
Relaxed feeling while being there.

1) Gengenbach is a picturesque and quaint town in the Black Forest region. It has good transport connections to other towns in Black Forest and makes a good base for visiting Black Forest.
2) Unfortunately when we were there in end-Sep 2022, there were numerous train delays between Gengenbach and Munich and on many routes throughout Germany. On our 2nd day there, a strike in France went on for 36 hours and caused reduced train service and worse train delays. Train schedules were so fluid that they changed from as frequently as every 30 mins. All this added an additional 5 hours to our total travelling time between towns in Black Forest, which originally would have taken only about 2 hours both ways. It was very trying and almost ruined our experience in Black Forest.
3) Gengenbach is mostly German-speaking and the shops, restaurants and hotels had few English-speaking staff. We were the few Asian people there and at most of these places, we received many long stares and people were always very surprised to hear us speak fluent English.
4) At Frei (Steinkellerhaus) restaurant, we walked in to ask for a table for 4. The restaurant was only half empty. A male waiter rudely told us that he had a table but their menus were only in German and they had no English menu. When we politely asked it if it was possible for him to let us know the menu items in English, he became even more rude and angrily told us that we had to translate the menu into English ourselves using the Internet and looked ready to kick us out of the restaurant. We found this terribly offensive and left immediately.
5) It is truly unfortunate that such a picturesque area which has inspired world famous fairytales, is the home of Black Forest cake and ham and whose main industry is tourism, has limited itself by language. If only it catered better to English-speaking tourists …
The apartment is very clean and spacious. Good enough for 3-4 people or family with 2 kids. The beds are comfortable, kitchen is well equipped. The location is great: 5 minutes walking to Gengenbach town centre, 10 minutes to the supermarket, tank station is right behind the corner. Free parking just in front of the house. However do not expect great views from the window - the apartment is actually in the (semi-)basement. For us this was not a problem at all, as the weather was good and we spent most of the time outside.
Our room was a little compact, however the large terrace more than made up for that.
It's a pity the weather was not fantastic at the time. (but not unusual for November :-))
Breakfast selection was a bit limited but everything was delicious.
We also had dinner at the hotel restaurant, which I definitely recommend!
The location was in a remote area of the village, which just adds to the charm for me.
Staff were super friendly and made sure we were well cared for.
The property was comfortable, spacious, very clean and in a great location with a beautiful view down the valley from the balconies. Robin, the owner, was very helpful and friendly. We did some great walks into the woods from the property, as well as being near the fairy tale town of Gengenbach which was so quaint and Medieval it was like being on a film set. Great WiFi at Haus Nilson too.
The location could not be any better - just steps from the quaint and charming center of Gengenbach. The apartment is very spacious, exceptionally clean with everything that you will need. When I had a problem starting the washing machine, the owner was over in minutes to show me what to do. Such a comfortable place to come home to after long days of exploring.
I loved the breakfast, and regretted that we didn't dine there the night before. But then there's plenty of options around town.
I absolutely loved the present for the dog. This has been the first hotel we stayed with our pooch where we feel the 'host' is actually going the extra mile to facilitate our 'baby'.
A cute hotel close to train station and a short walk to the town center. The bedrooms were clean and spacious, and the free breakfast was delicious. The staff were very kind and helpful, special thank you to Christy for helping us during our stay. Will definitely stay again if visiting.
Fantastic hosts, communicated clearly and swiftly on anything and everything. The property is located perfectly for easy access to Gengenbach centre, the pool, easy access to the forest, to Strasbourg in 45 mins, Colmar in an hour and a Europa-Park in 35 mins.
The Location was awesome! It is as close to downtown Gengenbach as you can possibly get. This makes walks in the city a breeze, especially in the early morning. The apartment was very clean and had nearly everything you'd need.
The restaurant downstairs was phenomenal and served one of the best meals of my trip, breakfast was also impressive. Staff were lovely and helpful. I’d certainly make it a stop on my next trip back to Germany!
Perfect location for the train and the town. Very pretty town. Very convenient car parking because we took bicycles. A nice room with balcony and a good meal in the hotel restaurant.
It was the cleanest hotel ever! Great location, beautiful gardens, elegant, cozy, most comfortable beds, delicious breakfast, friendly and helpful staff!
