The prrincipal reason for visiting Bad Lauchstädt (by bus 320, some 20 minutes from Halle, no rail station any more) is to attend performances of music, drama or musicdrama at the unique theatre. This heritage building from 1802 was bult by Goethe and visited by Schiller, and here Richard Wagner first wielded a conductor's baton. The bulding is beautifully preserved and an opera there is a memory to treasure. But it is not the only local attraction, for the old spa facilities, the church, rathaus, schloss and even the school are lovely buildings in a park and lake setting: the whole place has a huge tranquil charm to it. The Hotel Lindenhof where I stayed was part of that charm, with its comfortable room, friendly hardworking staff and a substantial German dinner after the opera. I recommend, and will return.
