An Inside Look at Gran Hotel La Florida G.L Monumento

Gran Hotel La Florida maintains its legendary look at Barcelona since 1924. This magnificent building was the accomplishment of Doctor Andreu’s dream, who wanted to build the best hotel in the best location of Barcelona city, creating an emblematic and stylish building. As many other buildings and monuments, the hotel suffered the consequences of Spanish civil war and was used as a military hospital during the conflict. It was in 1950 when it became a hotel again, as well as the favourite place of Barcelona's high society, and the summer residence of the wealthiest families in Catalonia. The hotel was also an international claim, welcoming people like Ernest Hemingway, James Stewart, George Sanders, and Rock Hudson. However, in 1979 La Florida succumbed to the passing of time and closed its doors. In 2001 it was rescued, thanks to a meticulous renovation that lasted four years trying to recover as far as possible the original decorative and structural elements, as well as combining traditional and modern design.

The fitness area is rubbish - no selection of equipment. And too humid, since it's sitting sitting in the pool area. Biggest complaint were the bed bugs - my entire body is covered with them. :-(

The hotel is located up on the mountain so there is no shops etc. near - this didn't bother us at all as it is a perfect location if you need some rest away from the crowds.
Exceptional hotel, a real gem! The views are breathtaking, rooms very comfortable and clean. The Staff is amazing, everyone is so helpful and really doing their best to make your stay memorable. We really felt like "at home" in this hotel! The tratements at hotel Spa are also at highest Level and the pool is very nice.

The spa area should have different time tables for the adults and kids. It would be nice that it would be open only for adults during the afternoon and night for example. It´s difficult to enjoy when the kids are screaming and jumping to the pool. The gym is not the best place for the drinking water. People are entering to the small gym room constantly to get the water and that makes the gym experience not that relaxed. The water could be on the open area or in the dressing rooms, easy to find for everybody.
Great location, beautiful rooms, lovely spa, really good restaurant for dining and lovely personal. Especially great if one wants to visit the amusement park or just have a special stay little bit outside of the town.

Unfortunately this very stylish hotel is being let down by some basic flaws for an establishment of this category: we were not offered help with our luggage at neither arrival nor departure, the free-of-charge hotel shuttle to the city center was unavailable during our two-days stay. These may seem like minor details however when one books a five-star accomodation he would expect the appropriate level of service. We came to this hotel from the Casa Fuster Hotel located downtown (ironically part of the same hotel chain), where upon departure we were assisted by three gentlemen - now that's service! Also the attitude of the front desk staff was below what I am used to in 5-star venues - again, if this was a 3-star budget hotel I wouldn't complain but for this level of service and price range I would expect more. I had requested taxis to be booked for us and with the request to be told when it arrives, at some point I went to check if the taxi has arrived and saw the driver waitin with the meter running... We had two rooms booked with the hotel and short before departure I realised that our room was supposed to have a coffee machine (my in-laws had one in their room). Finally, having booked through a third-party website, our city tax fee was included in the booking price. To my surprise I realised I was charged twice for the city tax as the fee was also included in my invoice for the restaurant. I've emailed the hotel and it's been two weeks and counting that await an answer. Which is a terrible let down because as I have spent over 1,500 euros is two days with this establishment (counting meals and beverages), I would not expect them to hide over an expense of 20 euros! It is a matter of principle and I deem to consider that I want to be charged fairly for my stay! So in essence this hotel overs stunning views and atmosphere, however I was really let down by the lack of professionalism.
Breathtaking landscape views of Barcelona, stylish decoration in the rooms and common areas, excellent pool area. Overall great comfort in the rooms with top-notch bedding. The buffet breakfast is of excellent quality, and offers a variety of quality products (special mention to the apple pie). Restaurant at dinner was OK but not exceptional. Especially the Christmas Eve menu seemed too expensive and not elaborate enough.

We enjoyed a lovely three night weekend break at the start of November. The hotel staff are clearly very highly trained and lovely to all guests. We particularly liked the pool and spa area. Even enjoyed a dip in the outdoor pool in the low winter sun with fabulous views over Barcelona. I felt it was the perfect romantic getaway. Sadly my partner finished with me the weekend after... but I don’t think that was anything to do with Gran Hotel La Florida!
