The Château of Lucy now sits in tranquility on the banks of the river L'Oise, although it has not always been this way. On a Roman archeological site, the Château has had a turbulent past. Occupied by Crown Prince Wilhelm in WW1 and German officers in WW2, it is now serene and peaceful, a haven, with the gentle burbling of the river and the birds singing in the trees. We have a rare and ancient Ginkgo Biloba tree, tulip tree, walnut, Scots pine, ash, rowan, oak, chestnut trees and many others, which attract red squirrels, a variety of songbirds and you can often see herons catching their lunch in the river.
On a sun baked day in July, we fell in love with the Château of Lucy at first sight. It was like a gingerbread house from the fairytale Hansel and Gretel. Fighting our way through 26 years of neglected wilderness, the air was so still and quiet, it was like the land that 'time forgot.' We kept asking ourselves, how could anyone let something so beautiful fall into so much disrepair. Ten years on, we are still asking. We have put our life and soul into the Château, 10 years of renovating and rebuilding so that you can come and enjoy a stay, easy enough to get to, but far enough into France to be truly French! We love going for a walk around the estate with Trevor and Nigel, our two leopard spotted Bengal cats and sitting down in the sunshine with an ice cold beer, a perfect end to a long summer day.
With its beautiful art deco buildings and marvellous restaurants, St Quentin is a great place to visit. Sit outside have a coffee and listen to the fabulous musical town hall clock. There is a huge Cathedral (basilica), markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, designer and artisan shops. There are museums, underground caves from the wars, rivers to explore by kayak, small boats, large boats, parks and picnic areas. Each summer the town square is turned into St Quentin plage, with sand dunes and swimming pools. The nautical park at Chauny also makes for a great day out with swimming lakes, picnic areas, play parks and country walks. Château de Pierrefonds is where the tv series 'Merlin' is filmed and makes for a spellbinding day, as does Disneyland or Parc Asterix which are all easily drivable from Lucy. Cathedrals abound in Picardie, from Laon (the capitol of France, before Paris), to Reims and Amiens. Ribemont has its own claim to fame, a museum dedicated to the Marquis de Condorcet, a very famous philosopher, mathematician and political scientist born in Ribemont in 1743. It has to be one of the tiniest museums in the world!
