Micklegate house was built in 1752 as the town house for Sir John Bourchier of Beningbrough. Designed by John Carr it represented one of the finest town houses in the city. Along with other members of the gentry and aristocracy, the Bouchiers would visit York for entertainment in the for of horse raceing, a theatre visit, or even a day in the law courts which often cuminated in a public hanging. On the death of John Bourchier the house passed to Bourchier's widow who died in 1796, and was then leased to James Walker and, from 1811, to Joshua Crompton (1755–1832), who bought the freehold in 1815 and in whose family the house remained until 1896.
