This was our 2nd time staying at The Bear - we just love it. Sitting in the garden is so relaxing even though it does get very busy. The building is beautifully presented and very tastefully decorated. We have been lucky on both stays to be given the same room - room 6 which is just lovely. We like to eat in the bar as it is less formal and the food is excellent, good menu choice and reasonably priced. Breakfast is very tasty and the restaurant has a nice view out over the common. Staff are very friendly and attentive. Excellent safe parking on site.

The location of the property is perfect, surrounded by a fantastic scenery. The pub garden is massive however unfortunately, we weren't able to enjoy it as it started raining as soon as we arrived. The room was a bit disappointing as it overlooked the main road. The room was also quite dark and didn't have air-conditioning (I was aware of this) which was fine when we were there but I can imagine how hot it would've been inside if we were there during the heatwave. Bathroom was spacious and modern. We had our dinner at the pub and while the food was good, service was a bit on the slow side. It's understandable though as they were quite busy when we were there and the diners sat in different areas of the hotel so it must have been confusing for the staff. Breakfast was good although it was such a small portion. We still had a great stay nevertheless.

Originally built in the 17th Century, this former coaching inn provides a warm welcome for all, including dogs who will feel right at home in our country house bedrooms with plenty of walks to enjoy. The Library Restaurant is located in the oldest part of the building and serves AA Rosette-awarded dishes in a relaxing environment. Meanwhile, the Bear Bar is typically English with real ales on draft and a more casual food offering.

  • Do you allow dogs

    Hi, Thank you for your enquiry. We allow dogs in our Country House Annex Superior Double/Twin rooms - Only (ground floor rooms with walk-in shower). None of our other rooms are pet friendly sadly (none of the main house rooms are pet friendly).

    Hi, I can confirm that our Library Restaurant will be open on the 24th of December same as our lovely Bear Bar. On Christmas day, both, restaurant and bar will be closed - with restaurant being open only for residents. Kind regards, Sorin

  • Is the hotel reachable on foot from the train station? I don't mind the distance to walk, just cannot tell if can walk next to the main road. What walks/hikes can one do from the hotel, that are doable without a car?

    The hotel is at 2 miles away from the closest train station (Stroud Train station). You can walk to the hotel from the train station but please bear in mind that it is mainly going up on a steep hill. Taxi cost from train station to hotel - about £8

  • We have booked for six people and a small dog

    In order to accommodate requests from ALL our valued guests we accept dogs in our Executive room only. Those rooms are located on a ground floor, fitted with king size beds, walk-in showers and have recently been refurbished.

    -We can reserve a table for you on 2nd October. Please note the last sitting time is 8.30 pm -Breakfast on Saturday starts from 8am -Electric car charging point is not maintained by the hotel, however we as a hotel can provide cable for charging
