Some interesting shops, Herriots was good value for money and the walks around the town were lovely although there was snow on the ground. Good entertainment in the Golden Fleece watching the staff cock up all the orders for meals and drinks! Beware of the unpleasant traffic warden who comes all the way from Scarborough so has to earn his corn and also the pieman opposite Neros which we happen to cross swords with.Staff in Herons and the Coop were exceptionally helpful.

Thirsk is a lovely place to visit.
Thirsk is a lovely place to visit. There are many cosy teashops (Upstairs, Downstairs was our preferred choice with a great selection of snacks, main meals (including daily specials) and cakes! A great Italian restaurant (Bianco), which I can highly recommend - but do book - we booked for a Wednesday evening and it was very busy! There is also a good selection of bakeries for yummy cakes, cookies and breads! Lots of charity shops for a few bargains, Co-Op, Boots & WH Smith. There is also a large Tesco supermarket just out of the town.
A visit to Thirsk wouldn't be complete without a visit to The World of James Herriot - it was brilliant!
There is also a lot of parking, both short and long stay.
All in all a great time was had by us, and I wouldn't hesitate in returning to Thirsk again!

There were lots of local shops, cafes and a local market at the weekend. The old town centre was very quaint. It wasn't too busy or too quiet. There is a locally run cinema. It is less than 20mins on the train to York. The locals are friendly.

A lovely little town that has shops, a little market and nice cafe’s. You can see where James Herriot lived and worked and everything is in walking distance from where you park. There is plenty of parking and it’s free for an hour. It is a must see little town.
We stayed for one night on our way to Scotland and the Bay House Country Inn exceeded our expectations. A lovely Inn in a small village that seemed miles away from the A1 even though it was only about 5 minutes, a much better option than the normal generic hotels. The Inn had a lovely atmosphere, good beers, parking on-site and the room was comfortable. The food was good, reasonably priced and very plentiful! The host was welcoming and helpful. Overall we were very pleased with our stay and would happily stay there again.
The property was beautifully presented and very clean. Allison was really clear with information about how to find and enter the property, and we received some lovely welcome chocolates once inside!
Property location was perfect, right in the centre of Thirsk and close to supermarkets, shops and cafes. just a few minutes walk to get some coffee and breakfast each morning!
Would definitely recommend staying at The Old Surgery for a weekend in Thirsk or to explore the local area.
Great location close to Thirsk. A lovely old hotel with extensive menu - great food. We had intended to go back into Thirsk for dinner but after seeing the menu choice it was any easy decision to eat at the Old Oak Tree. Room was in a row of four adjacent to the main building, was modern with everything we needed and spotlessly clean. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Kirkgate was a lovely hotel a short walk from Thirsk town centre. It's located almost nextdoor to the James Herriot museum which I visited.
The owner really went out of his way to check each guest was okay. The bedroom was lovely with a super comfortable bed and large soft pillows.
Overall a wonderful hotel and I would highly recommend it.
we stayed there last year when we were going o a wedding. we were going to another wedding in the area so we booked The Bay Horse again as we enjoyed our sty there last year. the food is good and he venue has plenty of character. some of the new B&Bs hotels etc have no character at all. Rainton is a lovely little village.
A very comfortable cottage in a lovely area, with easy access to lots of the sites and beautiful landscapes of North Yorkshire. Warm and cosy, good sofas and very nice oak furniture throughout. Extra touches - like seasoned logs for the woodburner, fresh flowers, slippers and bathrobes - were a much appreciated surprise.
The cottage was in an excellent location - quiet but only minutes from the centre of Thirsk with parking outside. The accommodation was lovely, well equipped and comfortable. The hosts were welcoming and sent information before the visit which was clear and helpful. We would certainly return in the future.
This was an excellent location to serve as our base for exploring North Yorkshire. The cottage is very cozy and we enjoyed the view of the horses and donkeys from our window. As Americans, we really missed having a coffee maker--a cheap pour-over would be a nice addition to the kitchen equipment.
Geoff was very friendly and informative. The breakfast was delicious because Geoff went down to the market to get fresh food and eggs. Also, the town is adorable and the location of the hotel is excellent. We had a most enjoyable time!
Spotlessly clean, comfortable and cosy cottage. Great location with only a short walk to the centre of Thirsk. Welcome pack is a lovely touch. Everything you need to make it a home from home.
beautiful room “Halo suite”. it was fantastic!! the bathroom was the best I’ve ever experienced in a hotel (claw tub, shower, double sink, original looking WC, Fantastic breakfast
