Canterbury’s religious and historic significance has inspired literary greatness. Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ were based on pilgrimages to the bygone shrine of Thomas A Becket, who was murdered here. The Marlowe Theatre is named after the 16th-century playwright born here, and the Canterbury Museum has an exhibit on Rupert Bear, whose author lived in this River Stour city.
River cruises and punting provide fantastic views of the striking weavers’ houses right on the water, and of Westgate - the UK’s largest city gate. Other sections of the city walls remain, and there are also ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, named after the 6th-century saint who brought Christianity to England. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, but the modern-day seat is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral, dating to the 12th century.
From the same period are the Norman castle ruins, occupying the site of a wooden fort constructed by William the Conqueror. The mound they sit on in Dane John Gardens is thought to be a Roman cemetery, and an original mosaic is visible in the Roman Museum.
In the Buttermarket half-timbered houses and historic inns are interspersed with shops, and big name brands line the Whitefriars Shopping Centre. The Canterbury accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap hostels and city centre B&Bs.

Wonderful Cathedral and precinct which now allows dogs inside.
Parking in the city was expensive. We had a blue badge but it needs to be registered Mon-Fri to apply for free parking which I wasn’t aware of till too late.

Canterbury was lovely but the lack of phone signal everywhere was just crippling.
It’s not good enough when you’re trying to navigate and look up reviews of cafes and bars and restaurants, or contact people.
Third world city. We were thinking about moving to the city centre but absolutely no chance when you lose signal outside of wi-fi range. And no, I don’t want to have to sign into shops and cafes wi-fi all the time.
Rant over. I’m on Vodafone - maybe others do better but from those I spoke to, I think not.

Absolutely lovely, people very friendly, so much history.
Absolutely lovely, people very friendly, so much history. The kings golden mile fabulous, and the little bar so quaint The Thomas Tallis ale house wonderful gentleman (owner) so helpful with great ideas what to see and even the train schedule back to london. This pub was so comfy and welcoming it was hard to continue on our journey, could have spend the entire evening there.
Canterbury cathederal a must see no question there. Also walk along the water with such beautiful gardens can’t miss it just to the right of the stone arch into the city. Also the crooked house now a book shop, take time to look around some exceptional books.
Our hotel was exceptional, great choices for lunch and dinner.
It would be a shame if you didn’t spend at least one full day and night in the quaint village.
So much to do and see so little time!

Canterbury was very nice and the hotel was a short walk from the city centre.
There was one problem that I encountered in the city and that was the amount of people rough sleeping, it seemed that it is quite a serious problem in Canterbury.

So beautiful city to stay and sightseeing all walking distance. Plenty of good restaurants and snack bars.Lots of local places of interest to visit The Cathedral is a must and so much to see and soak up the history. Shops on your doorstep and wonderful gardens Lovely Theatre and lots of local pubs. The river running along through the city The battlements also the city wall to walk around is a must.Canterbury is beautiful spring summer and autumn. Winter too. Recommended to all ages something nice for everyone.
The location could hardly be better for visiting Canterbury. It is only a ten-minute walk to the city centre. Another big positive is that there is ample parking for anyone arriving by car. The building is a beautiful 14th century timber-frame construction, that is now a restaurant on the ground floor with hotel accommodation above, entered by a separate door so that guests don't have to walk through the dining area to get to bedrooms. There is no breakfast service, but there are plenty of cafes nearby.
Breakfast is better than I expected and the hotel allows dogs to be with us in the restaurant. Everyone is super friendly, they welcome dogs very much. There is a huge free-run area behind the hotel for dogs and chill. The parking area is in front of the hotel, we feel very safe parking there. It is just 10 mins walk to the city centre, and a lot of supermarkets nearby. I highly recommend the EBURY hotel and would love to stay again.
It was just as expected … a quaint, older, quiet pub and inn. We didn’t want to visit England and stay in a big franchised Hotel. Comfortable bed. The room included a couch (which would make into a bed). The bathroom was very clean and updated. And all of the staff were helpful and friendly. Gave us some great advise on visiting in downtown Canterbury. And dinner was convenient, just ran downstairs.
The staff, that i encountered, night porter,Brian and the early shift porter,,Daryl , were most friendly and helpful and made my stay tenable .Great wifi. Close to Canterbury East station. Close to city centre. Wonderful size room. Modern shower system...the hotel always promptly replied to my e-mails. Parking space a big plus for drivers. Loved the quaint furnishing of the rooms
Location - excellent in Canterbury city centre.Parking available right outside hotel - there were still spaces available the night I stayed.
I inadvertently paid twice. The hotel contacted me promptly and refunded the over-payment.
Friendly staff.Room clean, quiet and comfortable.Good continental breakfast delivered to room due to coronavirus restrictions.
Hotel had a great location. I appreciated that Reception showed me a delightful way to walk into the center of Canterbury through gardens and alongside the river and it was one of the prettiest parts of the city and very restful. Also there was a pleasant garden at the back of the hotel.
Dining staff were very friendly and helpful as was Reception.
This is a decent pub with rooms above. It's a 2-minute walk to the centre of Canterbury and while it has no car park of its own, there is a public car park across the road (expensive but the pub arranges 24-hour parking for £12). Breakfast options were very good - they included avocado + egg or smoked salmon + egg on sourdough toast.
I couldn't have been closer to the entrance to Canterbury Cathedral, my main attraction. The breakfast was excellent. I DO like a real English breakfast. The room was larger than the average British hotel room--meaning that I could leave my suitcases flat on the floor and still walk around.
The hotel is located about 3 miles from Canterbury centre with no bus service. There is however a park and ride at Wincheap for £4/day with very frequent bus service into town centre.
The breakfasts at the hotel are excellent and the dinner menu good value for money.
I love Cathedral Gate Hotel and is my favourite in Canterbury. If you are coming to visit the Cathedral, this is the best and most traditional Hotel. Breakfast is absolutely delicious and the staff takes great care of you. I highly recommend Cathedral Gate Hotel.
We loved the location, the decoration of the hotel, cleanliness of hotel and room was great, bed was very comfortable & the modern bar had a wide selection of drinks. Bar staff very friendly and also gave information on local restaurants.
- great location. The city centre is across the road from the property. The property isn’t far from Canterbury East station. The area is so diverse that they have an Asian grocer and corner shop.
- friendly people.
-love the decor.
Fantastic location in the centre of Canterbury! Hotel had great facilities, staff were lovely, great breakfast. Arrived early and went to drop off our bags, but were allowed early access to the room because it was ready! Fantastic!
Although adjacent to quite a busy road, the hotel occupies a good position and is within striking distance to amenities, shops and Canterbury City Centre by car. The food is excellent. and the staff were very welcoming and helpful.
Lovely refurbished hotel. Ten minute walk into city centre so easily accessible to shops and restaurants. Staff very accommodating. Good reasonably priced food served in on site restaurant and comfortable bar area.
The location could not have been more convenient to the coach station and to the city centre. The staff was attentive and helpful. I have already recommended The Coach House to friends traveling in the area soon!
