The Greyhound is an historically important mainly thatched building, heritage Listed, with parts dating back to AD 1420. It was an Inn for hundreds of years and said to take its name from the King's (and Queen's) Messengers, known as Greyhounds, who stayed here whilst en route carrying their important missives! The property has three inglenook fireplaces dating from the 16th century and ancient beams galore! Nigel Balchin, one of the most well-known writers of the 1960's lived here as did members of the Rose family (Roses' Lime Water). Guests will breakfast in the oldest part of the house. Whilst retaining its ancient features the Greyhound has all modern features such as central heating, deluxe bathrooms etc. The 1 acre of gardens are wonderfully peaceful and attractive.
Kay and Doug ran a very successful hotel in Scotland for 13 years (Invernairne, Nairn) before returning to England in 2016. We instantly fell in love with the ancient Greyhound Cottage and the village on a first visit. Glemsford is built on a hill and has lovely views especially from the church. We love to walk from the front door into the field at the back of the property down to lovely Cavendish, it really is a beautiful walk. We love to visit nearby National Trust properties and Kentwell which frequently has historic re-enactments (some weekends in summer up to 250 Tudors!). At the bottom of our hill the River Glem runs into the River Stour, made famous by the painter Constable. Nearby Long Melford and Cavendish have famous Wool churches. It is a wonderful area that we continue to explore and discover.
Unusually for the region, south-west Suffolk is not flat but has beautiful gentle hills and stunning vistas. In our village are several pubs including the ancient and beautiful Angel Inn, and many historic thatched Tudor buildings. George Cavendish, gentleman-usher to King Henry VIII's Cardinal Wolsey retired to our village and wrote his biography of Wolsey in 1530 here. We have a village shop and post office. Within 3 miles there are two fabulous Stately Homes to visit (Kentwell Hall and Melford Hall), and many lovely villages. Just 6 miles away is Lavenham. Also nearby Sudbury town has the artist Gainsborough's home which is open as a museum with many of his paintings. Sudbury also sits on the lovely River Stour. From us it is a short drive to Cambridge, Ely Cathedral and many places of interest.
