The unspoilt shingle beach, about a mile away, is good for rock pooling and fossil hunting. It is also a haven for birds and there is a public hide at Pannel Valley Nature Reserve near Pett Level. The sandy beach and dunes at Camber are a short drive away. Also nearby are the picturesque village of Winchelsea and the medieval town of Rye with its many antique shops, tea rooms, historic inns, fine restaurants, and 12th-century tower.
