Dumfries is a mecca for all things Rabbie Burns; it boasts the site of his original grave, a Burns museum, the house where he last resided, his local pub and more besides. The people of Dumfries are exceptionally friendly and the town is steeped in history. The River Nith provides a romantic backdrop which is very atmospheric at night. Dumfries is easily accessible by road and rail and easy to get around. There are some very characterful places to visit and with more visitors, the variety of places to eat and drink will surely increase.

A town that is down on its luck but a lot going on to improve it at the moment. And it's a stronghold of Robert Burns history as well as being handy for some excellent countryside, coast, hills, etc. Great mountain-biking trails. A couple of really good places to eat (check out something fine at the Globe Inn).

The area is convenient to a beautiful castle ruin and nice birdwatching reserves on the River Nith. There were some restaurants in the town, but we had delicious dinner at the Friars Carse which is also open to non- hotel guests for dinner.

Dumfries is useful as the nearest big town, but we spent all of our time in the smaller towns and countryside: KIrkcudbright and Gatehouse of Fleet are both compact with good cafes and restaurants, and adequate shopping. It's a beautiful rural area with rolling hills and woods, many lovely bays and a dramatic coastline, with views over to the Lake District and to the Isle of Man in good weather. Perfect for a gently energetic holiday - walking or exploring the shoreline.

Interesting historic town.
Interesting historic town.
Well sign posted for getting around and also in and out of the town by car.
Nice area down by the river.
Would recommend the Cavens Arms for a meal - very good, and the pub has won various awards,.
The queensberry hotel and bar is a disgrace it has no bar no reception no restaurant no staff only one girl who doesn't speak English the manager is a very cheeky man who was told us to get out after one night as he cancelled our booking the place is filthy and a fire hazard with bags of bedding lying in corridors bags of plastic bottles in corridors I would have been better booking a hostel in I have reported it to Dumfries health and safety I would like for you to get in touch with me before I take it to the trading standards
All the staff were brilliant, the check in staff, the housekeeper, the Restuarant staff were especially excellent. The building was magnificent both internally and externally. Breakfast was fabulous with a wide choice of help yourself items plus a full cooked Scottish breakfast with many extra's if you really wanted them. The room was large with plenty of storage, the shower was double size. The value was excellent. The on site Riverside Walks are brilliant and the Hotel didn't charge for the map they provided.
Second time i've stayed and again the people who run Hamilton House were wonderful The room I had with the double bed was clean, very comfortable and I had plenty of space and was worth every penny. The breakfast was delicious and the dining facilities were warm and welcoming. Hamilton House is close to the train station and not far from the town center so it's ideal for anyone whos' never visited/stayed in Dumfries before. I am really looking forward to going back again soon.
Amanda was a great host, she was very helpful and made us feel very welcome, the room was spacious, the whole hotel and dining room was immaculate, and in a great location for the train station/ town centre both within walking distance, the breakfast was exceptional and the staff serving it where very polite and helpful, also the parking at the front of the hotel was ideal, overall couldn't fault the place, would certainly return, thanks for having us
Stayed with friends as we had a wedding nearby. Rooms where immaculate, bathrooms where spotless. I travel for work & stay in lots of hotels, this was different there was character & both of the owners where just lovely- even asking if we needed them to drop us at the wedding venue. Nothing was a problem for them al all. Really couldn’t recommend enough, was sad to leave! Oh also, breakfast was delicious, a great bonus!
Comfortable accommodation, breakfast set up very good, with optional porridge (which was delicious) followed by a buffet style Scottish breakfast, plus toast, cereals, fruit, yogurt etc. Lovely building and in accesssible area for access to Dumfries or to explore Dumfries and Galloway further.
The staff we met were very helpful and friendly and there was plenty of parking on site.
The hotel was warm and extremely welcoming and comfortable.. immaculately clean with beautiful decor in my opinion. a great location for discovering dumfries and within 2 minute walk of railway station
Will certainly be returning
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Dumfries villa. The bed was very comfy, the breakfast was lovely, and the location is great (situated near the train station - but can’t hear the trains, and a 5min walk away from town centre).
Great hosts, great location - Guests stayed for work, felt well looked after and rested for each shift when getting back on site. I'd recommend to book with the owners of the hotel directly for any upcoming visits in Dumfries :)
Immaculately presented hotel with very welcoming staff/owners. Proper home cooked food at dinner at highly competitive prices. Large rooms beautifully furnished. Large bathrooms. Welcoming public spaces beautifully decorated.
It was exceptionally Covid aware and clean. It's a lovely old Station Hotel next to the railway station. The staff were very obliging and the pre booked breakfast was extremely well organised by two staff members.
What a stunning place. A beautifully clean, stylish and comfortable lodge with the added bonus of a hot tub with a view. Perfect base to explore Southwest Scotland and I couldn't have wished for better.
Everything was perfect. I travel for work all over Scotland, and this is easily one of the best I have stayed at. I do not often leave reviews but this place and it's owners are top drawer
