Waterfront House, hotel in Kirkwall

Boasting a private beach area and views of sea, Waterfront House is a guest house set in a historic building in Finstown, 5.7 km from Maeshowe.

While not being a traditional BnB, the breakfast options were ample. We were on the move early both days so we wanted to grab and go anyway. We were also late getting into Orkney that evening on the late ferry from Shetland, We didn't arrive at Waterfront House until after 11pm but the owners met us anyway and they were very pleasant and hospitable, despite the late hour. Good communications with them too.

Royal Oak Guesthouse, hotel in Kirkwall

Royal Oak Guesthouse, a property with a shared lounge, is situated in Orkney, 2.2 km from Scapa Beach, 17 km from Maeshowe, as well as 19 km from Standing Stones of Stenness.

Breakfast was lovely. Owners were more than happy to cater to whatever you wanted. Typical Scottish fare for breakfast, so if you're on holiday, you're allowed to splurge a little from your norm. Food was cooked well, fresh and tasty. Fresh fruit already chopped was available if that was your desire...together with Greek yoghurt or to put on your cereal. Home made rhubarb compote...😋...was also on hand. Rooms were clean, warm and each had their own ensuite. Orkney has lots to offer, especially if you're a history buff like me. It also has a host of very talented crafty people, so make sure you follow the craft trail. So many scenic points of interest to mention. As for Kirkwall, it also has a lot to offer especially a very decent barista made coffee. Royal Oak Guesthouse is very centrally located and within walking distance to the centre of town. Stop and view inside St Magnus Cathedral.

A place combining plenty of history of different periods (we went on a fantastic trike trip (https://orkneytriketours.co.uk/) - great experience, visiting the Italian Chapel, standing stones and Scara Brae. The town itself has a 12-century cathedral, historical ruins, and museums, including the wireless communications museum, which was created and is being run by enthusiasts. There are also different daily art groups at Gallery 25 (https://www.facebook.com/Number25Kirkwall/?locale=en_GB) which we enjoyed joining. And the local English is very melodic - it is a pleasure listening to it! I can't say we discovered the fantastic seafood, but there is a lovely shop, The Brig Larder (https://www.jollysoforkney.co.uk/pages/the-brig-larder, one can also order local delicacies to be delivered) - again with lovely staff and a good selection of locally sourced dairy, cheese, seafood and preserves.

Kirkwall is a beautiful little city.

Kirkwall is a beautiful little city. I came for the incredible Neolithic history and to search for family ties in the area. There are many jewelry shops as well as artists studios and tweed or wool shops. The museum is also fantastic. It’s a fibre artist’s dream.

I would not stay at this hotel again out of choice .

I would not stay at this hotel again out of choice . We visited a restaurant out of town for a meal and it was superb. I then read the reviews for this restaurant with rooms which was in a beautiful location with lovely views and they were excellent also far cheaper. The restaurant was the Foveran and I would thoroughly recommend it. Also visited the Italian chapel and the site of the discovery of a 3000 year old settlement both of which are a must to see. I played golf at the Kirkwall golf club very friendly and welcoming although totally self booked with honesty box available .

It is a small, clean quiet town with some good restaurants and things to see like St Magnus Cathedral and the town museum. It is a good base to visit Scapa Flow, Stromness, the various assorted standing stones and the neolithic ruins at Scara Brae - how you do it is up to you but we took a tour, you could hire a car, you could ride bikes. You can hire wheels if one of you needs assistance when walking. But if you want to island hop then consult the local travel centre well in advance as the ferry time tables are tricky - or do it on your first day, And be aware that some places close Saturday and Sunday and not all stay open late - book your restaurants. They seem to stop serving by 9pm so think of eating probably from 6pm to about 8pm. They take bookings. Taxis are easily hired - phone for one - you will need to take a taxi to the Highland Park Distillery and you MUST book your tour there in advance - just turning up doesn't get you in.

Excellent location - only a few minute's walk into Kirkwall. Hosts were absolutely wonderful, welcoming, and hospitable -nothing was too much trouble. Comfort of bedroom was superb with lots of little extra touches that would put some expensive chain hotels to shame. Quality and quantity of breakfast was of excellent quality with many food choices and always fresh and well presented. Hope we will have the opportunity to stay again as we fell in love with Orkney!

The location to town is really convenient, just a quick walk in to Kirkwall. Very nice to have a dedicated parking area too. The new owner/manager Andy was so very helpful and friendly, easy check in. All of the breakfast staff were super friendly and efficient, breakfasts were really nice as was being able to make your choices the night before. Room was very clean and well stocked, the entire hotel smells clean whenever you enter.
