FAQs about hotels in Oxford

City of Dreaming Spires

Featuring a magnificent academic heritage, Oxford is a beautiful city where Gothic spires intermingle with medieval colleges. The home to England’s oldest university, most of the 38 unique colleges are sadly only viewable from the outside. Two that you can visit are Magdalen College, considered one of the most beautiful, and Christchurch College whose quadrangle was used in the 1st Harry Potter film. Its cathedral choir also sings evensong.

Other notable colleges are Balliol and Merton, the 2 oldest, while Hertford College has the Bridge of Sighs. Next door is the cavernous Bodleian Library, overlooking the round Radcliffe Camera, the city’s best-known landmark.

The university also has a botanical garden and the best Oxford museums, including the Ashmolean Museum and Natural History Museum, where swifts nest in summer.

Unsurprisingly for a student town, it has lots of bars and restaurants. Oxford shopping is also good and includes England’s oldest covered market, brightly colored High Street shops, and the Clarendon and Westgate shopping centers.

Whether you arrive by road or fly into London Oxford Airport, don’t leave without trying Oxford punting. In contrast to rival Cambridge, you punt here by standing in the front (rather than on the back). Easily accessed from the Oxford accommodations on Booking.com, the routes take in the River Cherwell and the Isis (the name for this part of the Thames).

Unfortunately, only spent a few hours walking around the old historic parts of Oxford. There's plenty of beautiful sandstone buildings and sights to see. Many places charge an entrance fee though but still enjoyed just wandering around looking at the architecture and down to the river was very pleasant. Definitely, will read up and research more on the history and places to see for a return visit to Oxford. Good bus service to the city centre.

I enjoyed the Ashmolean Museum, the Bodleian library and looking at all the wonderful buildings, colleges and Churches. The view from the top of the Carfax tower was superb as was the Covered Market and the main High St was full of many interesting shops. The Westgate shopping Mall was great - the city is very compact and easy to navigate. The streets are very clean and without rubbish everywhere. There are many good restaurants and bars at reasonable prices.

I was in Oxford for business but I plan returning for at least 2-3 days for historical sightseeing and dining out experience. Oxford in an hour by train from London Paddington train station for those who do not prefer to drive. An attractive old city in any season.

Oxford is a lovely place to visit and stay.

Oxford is a lovely place to visit and stay. It has so many attractions to see, colleges, the arboretum which is full of wonderful plants and flowers, lovely to visit at all times of the year, especially in the summer, when you can bring a picnic and sit on the lawn, and wile away the hours, and the many shops and alleyways that always lead you to somewhere of interest. An old traditional pub that is always popular is the Turf Tavern, that dates back to the 1800's, which can be found often by mistake down one of these alleyways.

    Lovely friendly city.

Lovely friendly city. Lots to see and the pubs were cosy and friendly. Sensible shoes a must for all the walking, and would recommend booking a tour to find out the historical facts behind the beautiful buildings. We ate at The Old Bookbinders Ale House and it was amazing food, couldn't fault it and we eat out a lot. We couldn't reserve a table but turned up around 6pm and got seated easy - even though the place was busy. Good prices and friendly staff. Loved the bookshops - particularly Blackwells. Stayed at the Holiday Inn outside the city and used the Park & Ride to get into town - £2 was a bargain and just under a tenner to get a taxi back home in the evening.

Oxford delivers the best of history, food and shopping.

Oxford delivers the best of history, food and shopping. There’s something for everyone. The many colleges and churches take you back in time and are worth the walks. The covered market makes for a truly entertaining afternoon. There’s a great variety in restaurants and bars- catering to a range of budgets. Definitely try the high tea at The Alice for a charming experience. A stay at the boutique hotel Malmaison Oxford, a fully modernized former Victorian prison, is worth the splurge as well. The amenities, staff and service are exceptional.

Westgate Hotel is perfect location for being next to Oxford Train Station and also near the buses. It is an older hotel and could do with some refurbishing. However, the owners are such friendly and helpful people, this more than makes up for the ambience. The breakfasts are delicious and young gentleman who waited on us, was so professional and delightful. He has a wonderful future in hospitality if that is his desire. We stayed here on 2 different occasions during our time in UK and would definitely stay there again.

The "superior" room was splendid - ample room (indeed 2), chairs, facilities, shower all fine. The location was excellent, in central Oxford, overlooking a lesser street and Oxford Union, so light, if not entirely quiet when windows were open on hot night - but fine and appropriate. Hotel was small and personal. Staff were efficient/polite + very helpful - good at luggage management.

The location is very good. It was very easy to walk to Oxford city centre in 25min. I appreciate the persons at the reception...Diana, Ruby etc...but the best of the hotel is the comfort of the bed...I stayed in a kingsize bed sleeping as in a dream :). Pillows very comfortable and the temperature of the room good for sleeping. If you are going to go in Oxford, this hotel is for you...
