Very quiet and community based, on the day we were leaving...
Very quiet and community based, on the day we were leaving there happened to be a car boot sale with many houses having garage sales which was very nostalgic which they do on the last Sunday of the month. As you drive into the village you drive through an arch which is very picturesque. The village has a few B&Bs a shop, a cafe and everything that you would really need. The glenesk hotel has access to the golf course and facilities of a sauna, steam room, gym and pool and an amazing whiskey collection. Lovely small village, all residents were friendly and happy to help with directions etc. the view by the river at the back of the cottage was outstanding perfect for long walks! The village had all we needed right on our door step, local shops, bistro, chip shop, local pub and a beautiful park.

Quiet but friendly small town.
Quiet but friendly small town. Good evening meals available at the Glenesk and Panmure hotels and morning coffee can be had across the road at Sinclair's Larder. The ice cream shop just below Oakbank also looked nice though we didn't try it. We also wanted to try the restaurant at the Caledonian hotel in nearby Brechin, because they had a much better vegan and vegetarian menu than either of the Edzell hotels, but it happened to be the last day of 'eat out to help out' and we couldn't get a table. We were there for a getaway in the countryside and Edzell was perfect for that. Somehow, we managed to get lucky and timed our holiday to coincide with four lovely sunny days after a very wet and windy August. We went walking every day. From the property, you can walk easily to the 'Shakkin Brig' or take a longer walk along the river gorge to the Rocks of Solitude. We also drove short distances to walk to a waterfall in Glen Mark and to see the Iron Age hill forts at the Caterthuns near Brechin. On the way home we stopped at Lunan Bay to walk along the beautiful sandy beach before driving to Arbroath for lunch at the Harbour restaurant.

Alan the owner was brilliant and couldn’t do enough for us. It’s a fab place to stay to explore the East coast and it’s amazing Castles and coves. Will definitely be staying here again soon.
