Welcome to Poplar House B&B - one of Bath's highest rated B&Bs - and experience living in an original Georgian House. Poplar House was built mainly in the mid-18th Century but its origins can be traced back much further to Jacobean times in the 17th Century when it is said to have belonged to a merchant, probably a clothier, who wished to build his residence in the village atmosphere of Batheaston, but very close to Bath and easily accessible to the old highway leading to London, still called London Road. Enjoy the elegance of staying in an original Georgian House with 21st century en-suite comfort, just over 2 miles from the centre of Bath, with free Wifi and free off-road parking and with a frequent bus service to the centre. Poplar House is a house of great character, history and charm, giving you a rare chance to experience living in a Georgian House with access to modern comfort and amenities. The House retains its Georgian style and character with examples of original features. Poplar House is a bijou Bed & Breakfast with three elegant en-suite double guest bedrooms recently opened in an 18th Century Georgian House. The proprietor is Mrs Susanne Hagen.
BATH CITY Bath was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987 to preserve its superb Georgian architectural and cultural heritage. It is one of England’s most famously beautiful cities and has become a cultural icon of Georgian times and remains one of the best known cultural centres of the world, clearly identifiable by its consistent buff-coloured, elegant Georgian stone buildings. It is a spa town dating back to Roman and Celtic times. Today, it is still famous for its hot mineral waters and its well-preserved, original, extensive Roman Baths and site of the original temple to the goddess Minerva. This feature of ‘taking the waters' made Bath famous again in the 18th Century when Royalty and the elite of Georgian society made Bath their ‘second city’ after London owning summer houses and spending the ‘season there’. One of Bath’s most famous visitors was, of course, the writer Jane Austen. The Roman Baths in Bath are one Great Britain’s greatest ancient sites. Built in the 1st Century in AD 60, just over ten years after the Roman invasion of Britain, they were a massive complex of hot and cold-water baths of different shapes and sizes and well worth a visit.
Just 200 metres away down the hill on the High Street of Batheaston Village, you have all the essentials in case of general purchases or (woe betide!) emergencies:- A short 2-minute walk from Poplar House on Batheaston High Street, which runs parallel to The Batch, there is a coffee-house/cafe called Gather with delicious coffee and home-made cakes and breads offering a daily lunch and a newspaper shop and a car-repair garage, Avondale Garage. In the village centre, just three hundred metres away on Batheaston High Street, there is a Boots chemist’s, a convenience store (open till 10pm), a doctor’s surgery, a dentist’s surgery, a hairdresser, a post-office, two pubs of which one offers food and the Fat Friar, a cafe and take-away offering hot meals, coffee, teas and snacks till about 9pm. Nearest pub offering food: George and Dragon (5 minutes) Batheaston High Street Nearest Gastro-pubs Bathampton Mill, a 15 minute walk, across the toll-bridge towards Bathampton on the River Avon The George Inn, Bathampton, a 20 minute walk, on the Kennet & Bath Canal The Crown, Bathford, a 15 minute walk, through Batheaston Village along the High Street.
