A Walk Through History
Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.
The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.
Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.
In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.
Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

Chester is a melting pot of culture and social classes which I loved. Shopping, bars, restaurants and nightlife, markets and live music.
Friendly people and lovely walk along the river. Old buildings full of character plus modern twists. The old cathedral was lovely too. I cant wait to visit this wonderful city again soon!

So much history.
So much history. The rows are unique incorporating shops, restaurants and bars, some of which are unique and full of historical facts. The sick to death museum is really interesting. Didn't get chance to go in the Cathedral.
Chester Zoo near by is amazing.

We visited the Food Show at Chester Racecourse which is always good for buying those special treats. The Food Show is well organised and provides something for everyone. Chester has a wide range of shops to suit all budgets. Chester has many restaurants to suit all tastes too. We have visited The Bluebell for tapas and the Koconut Grove, both have been amazing.

Huge, beautiful and fascinating Cathedral with excellent cafe food in stunning surroundings. Lovely old and interesting buildings in the town centre. Mostly traffic-free centre. All the big names if shopping is your thing, plus a wide range of indies. Grosvenor park and riverside walking is a delight. Walking almost the circumference of the town along the city walls gives great views and is traffic-free. Maybe a river trip next time.

Full of history a wonderful city. Fantastic shops and Boodles next door. Ladies drool looking in their windows.
If fit enough do not miss the walk up above that circles the city, the view looking down is wonderful.

Exceeded my expectations - quality finishes and furnishing everywhere, quiet, spacious, full of charm and elegance beyond what is customary. Thick, large towels and quality wooden hangers in the wardrobe. Lovely and large sitting room to gather in outside of room.
Perfect location to walk into Chester or to village shops and restaurants. Owners are on premises and keep things to a high level. Delicious and fast breakfast service. Parking was good.
It is a lovely historic hotel. Our room was beautifully presented with a lovely bathroom.
We requested two twin rooms for our three-night stay and they were side-by-side.
Obviously very close to the railway station and walkable into the city centre.
Delicious and plentiful breakfast which really set us up for our days out.
We were friends from Chester College (University) days enjoying a reunion and the hotel was a good place to stay.
Arrived 2hrs before room available and used leisure facilities which were very good- jacuzzi very warm, pool nice temperature and sauna also good - . Lockers good size so overall very relaxing. Room was spacious, clean and warm, bathroom clean - Free carpark is always nice as always charged by City centre hotels. This hotel is ideally situated a few minutes walk from Chester’s city centre restaurants, bars and other attractions. Although it’s not the most attractive building externally the room and bathroom we had both looked as if they had been recently refurbished. The young lady who checked us in was a pleasure to deal with - friendly, welcoming, polite and helpful.
The hotel is faultless, from the ease of check in, the room and bed are very comfortable and quiet.
The location is perfect for visiting the sights of Chester.
The breakfast is well organised and plenty of it to set yourself up for the day.
Easy access for Chester just a few mins walk into the city centre.
Car parking at the hotel and public parking under the hotel so very convenient. Friendly and helpful staff, the lady on reception called Cat was very helpful when we arrived.
Location, wasn't too far from Chester (driving wise). Also the price was good as well compared the city centre hotels. I also liked that were still able to serve food with it being 11pm, even if it was just a mushroom pizza.
Excellent location for Chester City centre, and a nice high street nearby. The hotel bar was comfortable and friendly with a good selection of cask ale on offer . Breakfast was well cooked and nicely presented.
Good location with a 5 minute walk into Chester city centre and free onsite car park. Hotel was very clean throughout, good breakfast with plenty of choice and all the staff were very welcoming and friendly.
We loved everything about this hotel. Only a short walk to Chester city centre..
Being an old Victorian house it had plenty of character.
It weems to be run by people who know what they are doing/
Great location for us, very comfortable and clean rooms, some brilliant design touches throughout the property and the outside space is excellent.
It is our go to venue when we visit Chester.
Nice and trendy hotel. Minimalistic and stylish! 15 mins walk to city, 7 mins to train station, by the canal and had handy Waitrose next door and great pub. Clean, new and well located.
