First I met lovely people at the Book Aid shop that drew me in on the way to the castle. A woman there informed of the existence of some little known or advertised places of historical interest. The well known points of interest, the castle, the Bowes Museum, and the Butter Market—wryly referred to by local people as “the round thingy” in the middle of the high street—lived up to expectations. The charity thrift shops and the Witham, a cultural center cum shop on the High Street offered wonderful shopping. People working at the castle, the Bowes museum, and the food co-op were wonderfully helpful, The food and service at Blagraves in a remarkable building, parts of which date from the 15th century, were excellent.
The town is easy to get around. Almost everything to be seen and done is on three contiguous streets, Galgate, the High Street, and the road leading from the Butter Market, about a five-minute walk, to the Bowes Museum (I didn’t get its name). There’s a sign for the castle ruins hidden and sloping downhill behind the Methodist church at the corner of Galgate and High Street.
I was only disappointed to not be able to see the prayer labyrinth in the floor of St.Mary’s Anglican Church at the corner of High Street and the road to the museum. It was covered with chairs occupied by worshippers for a special service with performance by a huge childrens’ choir at the moment I looked in on a Friday afternoon and the seating was being kept in place for several services over that weekend of the third Sunday of Advent. It was a consolation to see such signs of spiritual life in that church, and, God willing, I’ll get to see the labyrinth at a quieter time.

Lovely small town with lots to see and do in surrounding area
Pubs are good and a great choice for eating from breakfast to evening meal
Hecklers cottage was lovely where we stayed but house keeping appalling good job plenty places to eat out
Such a shame !!
We would love to stay again
The hosts (Glenda and Daniele) were wonderful and very kind. We had two rooms: two of us were in the garden room, which was absolutely wonderful. I stayed in the single person room (room 1) which was quite small, but equipped with every amenity and comfortable. Both rooms were on the garden and very quiet at night.
The breakfast was the best English breakfast I have ever had in many trips to the UK!
Parking on the street was free, and it is 10 minute walk to the town centre.
We visited Barnard Castle from US (Brooklyn NY) for a family wedding. We were not familiar with the area, but loved how the home is tucked away on a quiet street yet walking distance to center of town . Don't forget to look at the helpful binder and sit in the little garden. I really appreciated the treats on arrival as we had a very long train journey. The house is packed with charm and kept very clean. I only wish we could have stayed more than two nights.
We were looking for a stay near High Force and Barnard Castle so this was perfect! A really reasonable rate with hearty breakfast included. We received simple instructions of how to access our room and were very pleasantly surprised at the lovely room we had. So comfy. We had a shared bathroom but didn’t see another person during our stay. The staff were lovely and the locals friendly and helpful in the bar.
Really great place to stay, gorgeous local area. The room I had in the courtyard was exceptional, cosy but enough space. Decent comfy bed, powerful shower and so quiet you cannot hear any other guests. The breakfast was delicious and I also had an evening meal there too which was superb. There were a few of us staying with our dogs and they made us feel very welcome. Would definitely book again!
Location to Barnard Castle excellent, as you can walk to pubs, shops, coffee bars etc. plenty of room in the accommodation. Well supplied with utensils crockery etc. Warm, parking and also free parking for 2nd cars close to the property.
Nearby pub Blue Bell lovely atmosphere, and how a pub should be.
This is a really exceptional relaxing and well appointed hotel. Lovely helpful staff, well organised for Covid restrictions. Great light room with four poster, superb dinner and breakfast. Great bar and extensive outside space and stylish furnishings. I had a wonderful stay.
The Inn was easy to find and the staff were helpful. The room was clean and tidy, the shower was good, nice and hot. The room was comfortable. The breakfast was good with choice of breakfast. The location was about 10 minutes walk from the centre of Barnard Castle.
Lovely hotel with very spacious rooms with big beds. Comfy bar that serves good real ales and good sized meals. The breakfast was very good too. Barnard Castle is a lovely town, you can see why people come her for an eye test.
Situated at Brignell a short country drive from Barnard Castle, through pasture Yorkshire.

Stayed in the stables which is separate from hotel, lovely room, friendly staff, & food excellent.
Will hopefully visit Barnard Castle, & The Three Horse Shoes again.
The location as excellent - we walked into the town for some lunch. The snow made travelling difficult and our car was stuck at the property in the snow on friday.
Staff are helpful and very friendly. Location is great - 10 minutes from Barnard Castle. Very peaceful despite nearness of A66, with walks from the hotel.
